I never really considered the AKL until I read everyone's rave reviews. But the rooms and lobby look beautiful. My main concern was it was so remote, but at least the busses dont have a lot of stops like the moderates. Here is my question- I am planning on switching to the AKL the last two nights of our trip but can only afford the standard view. Is it still worth it? Are upgrades common if the resort isnt full, I dont really feel right asking for one- so I go expecting to get what I pay for. Is the AKL still worth the extra money over a moderate if I only have a parking lot view?

That depends on how much time you plan on spending at the resort. If you are only sleeping there, then no, it's probalay not. If you want tos pend some time at the resort, then yes. I wouls STRONGLY suggest taht you let them know that any standard view room is fine, except 2033-2036--these are ground floor, right next to the bus stop, offer NO privacy and people walking right outside your door all day and night.

If the resort isn't full, you'll probably be upgraded to a pool view. If it's really slow, you might get an upgrade to a savanah view, but it seems that generally the upgrade for standard is to pool.

There are still public viewing areas you can access to see the animals.

We always stayed at moderates or the Swan and were very happy. However, we stayed at AKL in February and were blown away. The pool, animals, activities, fabulous bus service, delicious food and over the top accomodating staff were fabulous. We booked standard view and requested the quietest non-smoking room possible with bunk beds. I called the room assignor 2 days before arrival and reiterated my requests. I also told her I knew we only booked standard but would like the best view possible. She said all my requests would be met since the resort was not full. We were upgraded to a lovely pool view. The bellhop advised if I was in any way not happy with my room, I could be immediately moved. We were very happy and kept the room. My impression is that they upgrade from standard view whenever possible. We were so happy with the resort, we would be fine with standard view.:bounce:

We stayed over New Year's in a savanah view room. (2435) It was great but this summer we are staying in a standard view room. I found that my kids spent most of their free time running around the resort to the different lookouts and viewing spots anyway! For the difference in price, we can afford to stay longer that way. I would request Ostrich trail if you end up going with a standard view. It is the end opposite the bus stop.

We booked standard view on our recent trip in Feb and were upgraded to a pool view room that was just awesome! There are so many animal viewing areas that I think we still got an awesome "animal" experience even though we were not on the savannah. By hunting (they provide a map) for all the viewing areas you also got a wonderful tour of the hotel. DH, DD and I all loved this hotel - the decor, restaurants, pool, transportation, animals, and friendly cm's just blew us away!

Have fun!

We have been going to Disney for the last 6 - 7 yrs. We ususally stay at the all star music. we have had great luck with everything, room location, clean room, etc. This summer we are going in Aug. My 50th bday is a couple of weeks before, so we were thinking of animal kingdom. it is so much more to stay , so my big problem is should we splurge or not, cause weve been so often. we have 13 dd and 13 d. girl friend. They love fast food so im not sure it they will like food here. please help with opinions. thanks alot.
