We are booked at POFQ and were thinking of switching to AKL. We won't be able to afford the savannah view:sad2: . Could you tell me about a standard view? I also heard the rooms are dark. Is there enought lighting in the vanity area to do hair ect ? Would you stay at the AKL if it was just a standard or stay with POFQ.

We booked a standard room but got upgraded to a pool view. There's not that many standard view rooms, so I guess a lot of people get upgraded.

The following are the room types and numbers of rooms in each category: Standard View (facing the parking lot) 135 rooms; Pool View 136 rooms; savanna View 724 rooms; Deluxe Pool View 33 rooms; Deluxe savanna View 191 rooms and 55 Concierge rooms.

The rooms were darkish but not too bad. I don't really "do" my hair so it didn't bother me. I've heard some people bring a lighted makeup mirror.

There are lots of places to "look out" on the animals without a savannah view. I loved hot tubbing at night and then wandering around after wrapped in my towel to see the various animals. It's a really nice resort - you'd probably love it!

Yes, I certainly would upgrade to AKL. I like POR, haven't stayed at POFQ (but love New Orleans so I suspect I'd love POFQ) but wouldn't miss the opportunity to stay at AKL.

I would vote for AKL.

We visited the AKL last trip for dinner at Boma, and were amazed at the beauty of the hotel itself, as well as the wildlife. We went to a public viewing area right off the lobby and saw lots of animals. There was even a guide there to answer any questions people had about the animals and their care. Of course a savannah room would be great, but I think you can see plenty of "wildlife" no matter where your room faces. We were so impressed by AKL that we want to stay there on our next trip to WDW.

We had a standard view in December. It looked out at the taxi stand in front of the hotel. But it was a bunk bed room (which we didn't ask for) so that was kind of fun. We are "all day" park people so not having a savannah view was OK. We love AKL!

FYI - the breakdown of how many rooms of each type in a previous post is from before the DVC conversion. There are only 972 rooms in the "hotel" now, the rest have been switched over to DVC. Not sure what the current breakdown is on how many of each category.

DH and I had standard view in October -loved the resort. The differences from PO are obviously theming, but also the buses only have one stop instead of four or five throughout the resort, the corridors are inside at AKL instead of out at PO, there are many activities (night vision of the animals, cookie decorating at Boma, etc.), they have wonderful restaurants at AKL and a huge and unique gift shop. The pool is zero entry which is great for little ones, and the lobby is so comfy it's nice just to sit and read or people watch. The rooms are a bit dark due to the decorating, but beautiful and I had no problem seeing at the vanity to do my hair and make-up.
Enjoy your trip whatever you decide!
