AKL Savannah View-The problem with my room!

I was just reflecting back on our trip at AKL. We had a savannah view room, Uzima Savannah over the people pen. I was disappointed, but I made do. Now, the problem that I'm referring to may be unique to me, but I'm curious if anyone else has had this experience, because I notice it happens at the WL also. When I sit down, my view is blocked by the railing. In order to see, I either need to crouch down in my seat to look or sit up and peer over the railing. It seems like the railing comes right at my eye height. Has anyone else had this problem? It took away a little bit, because I could never just relax and look out. I can't be the only one this has happened to. Maybe a phone book next time?

How tall are you? I have never had that problem and I have stayed there twice (AKL) and at WL too... I am 5' 2"

I'm 5'7". You must be able to see under the railing then. Are you seeing over it?

I can't really remember :rotfl: I just know that I spent tons of time onthe balconies (especially at akl - with room service dinner :) ) and I never had a problem with my view being obstructed :confused3

What exactly is the people pen anyway?

I'm 5'4" tall and couldn't see over or under the railing. It didn't bother me to slouch down to see under it, though, and often I'd stand up and lean on the railing to take pictures.

Speaking of AKL balconies, have you ever had a critter come visit you? We had a frog on ours for a day. Never saw a lizard, though I expected them to climb up there.

SBC (Southern Building Code) requires all railings on second story and above be a minimum of 42" tall.

I've been at both WL and AKL and never had that problem, but I'm only 5 ft. tall.

Every balcony I have ever been on the rail is right at eye level. Even on the disney cruise, there was that rail right at eye level. I always take a pillow or cushion to sit on the balcony.

Glad you brought this up, we will be at AKL in a week, and I had forgotten about that rail problem, now I will just plan to bring along a cushion

We had a view at the akl with the people pen in there and we requested to move. I think that is an unaccpetable room when you pay for a savannah view. I can upgrading for free to that room but I don't think it should go to people who are paying for a view.

What is it that's bad about the people pen view, exactly? (I've booked a savannah view in August).

The people pens bothered us at first, but when we saw how many animals were gathering around there, the kids refused to move. After the first day, the pen didn't even bother me. You don't actually see people, it's just a divided section of the savanah, in case they have to evacuate the hotel. This way, the people and animals are kept seperate. ;)

That doesn't sound too bad, then. Probably best to keep the guests away from the animals with the large horns during and evacuation.

I have a picture of the people pens, but don't know how to post pictures on here. :confused3

I am 5'4" and I have that exact problem. I either have to stand or crouch when I am sitting to be able to see off the balcony.

This is the people pen. Yes, the railing was in the way, but there were enough gaps to see ok. We had a view of the people pen and a deluxe room at that, I agree that it isn't the best view to give people, but we did have a lot of animals in our little area and it was a lot more priviate then the other rooms.

I never had that problem at AKL OR WL. Or maybe I never noticed it. I am 5'4". Maybe you could just move the chair a teensy bit forward or backwards?

The only thing that drives me nuts is the solid balconies on the 6th and 7th floors at WL. If you sit out there, forget it...you ain't seeing nuthin'!

Okay, so that's the people pen! For some reason I imagined it would be somewhere near a public area where people would gather to watch the animals. We had a room above the people pen and I have absolutely no complaints about it (we got a complimentary upgrade though... but I'd still pay for it!).

Now, what's the difference between a "regular savannah" room and a "deluxe savannah" room? I was pricing next year's trip online and was trying to figure out the difference between regulars and deluxe for the savannah and water view. Thanks to that upgrade, we'll probably never choose a standard view again -- mostly out of fear of being in one of those rooms by the bus stop, but also because we were so pleased with our savannah view.

We paid for our "people pen" view. And yes, we were disappointed but didn't push to be moved, although we requested it. I didn't really like the Uzima Savannah-I would have preferred Arusha. Next time! And, I'll probably request an extra pillow to sit on and see if that will help. I hated crouching down every time I wanted to see something.

I also have the same problem (5'4'') with balconies. My DH (6'4") and DS's (6'3" and 6'2") don't...I wonder why? LOL

Marseeya: The deluxe Savannah room sleeps 5 people and they are only on the 5th floor.
