Iam kind of worried. We are staying at AKL next month. We will be staying without a car and I know the AKL is far away from everything else. How is the food court? What food items are offered? Iam sure we will depend alot on the food court after the parks. Any info would help....

The Mara is the best food court at any deluxe IMHO. It is set up more on the idea of the food courts at the value resorts, although not as big, of course.

They offer a variety of different types of hot food - not just burgers and pizza like the monorail food courts! The refillable mugs come with a myriad of options for soda, and the cold case holds plenty of delicious treats - be sure to try the dessert sampler - zebra domes and chocolate mousse cups - YUMMY!

Hi,

Hope fmelchor88 doesn't mind if I piggy back on thier question. We are staying at AKL next month as well. We are coming in from California and will not be checking in until late (arrive at the airport at 10:00PM). Unfortunately we leave California seven hours earlier. I'm afraid we will be hungry by the time we get to the hotel. Anybody know how late Mara is open or how late room service will serve. I figure we will arrive at the hotel between 11:00 and 11:30 - we are taking a town car. Any thoughts for my hungry family.

Shelly,

We were at the AKL last July & I'm looking at our check-in brochures from the resort.
The Mara opens at 6:30 am & closes at 11:30 pm.
Room service is avail. 6:00 am until midnight.
I'm pretty sure that this info should still be valid, hope this helps.

Ron

We stayed at AK last June and if I'm not mistaken the food court starts shutting down about 11:00. You may be able to get very limited service after that but I wouldn't count on it. I would call the hotel directly to verify the hours.

As far as the food - the prepackaged items were very good including the famous Zebra domes and crispy chocolate cups, and granola and yogurt that was the best I have ever had. Mara is very expensive however. Chips and a chocolate milk were like $4. They do have a few regularly priced items such as prepackaged donuts by the dozen, fishy crakers, etc.

Please describe these "zebra domes". Are they a dessert or what?

I was not overly impressed with the Mara. Maybe it was just me though, I am a ver picky eater. I didn't think there was much variety. I didn't try the Zebra Domes, I don't even remember seeing them. I will have to look for those next month when we go back. :teeth: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce:

The Zebra domes are a coffee flavored mousse on a chocolate cookie base drizzled with stripes of chocolate - YUMMY!!

I am not sure the term "food court" applies to Mara. It is not like one at the mall. There are several different sections to get food from. You then take it to a central cashier to pay.

We had hot dogs and fries from the hot food section. They were hot and tasty. They have chicken fingers, pizza, burgers, mac and cheese.

There are several cases with cold food. We had a wonderful roasted chicken sandwich on pretzel bread. There were many choices of sandwiches and salads. Desserts were here, also. The pecan pie was yummy!

There were bakery items, fruit, juices, drinks, and some groceries like bread, milk, cereal, chips. You buy your refillable mug here and fill it here.

We were very pleased with the choices and the quality. We wished we had tried it sooner on our trip.

here are menus for breafast and the rest of the day. I noticed these are not quite what we had last week, but close.

I think Mara must be hit or miss. I've seen great things about it, but we did **not** like it at all. We ate there our first afternoon. We all had diff things. Selection was good, but the food itself didn't taste very good. My girls usually eat anyone's chicken, just not here.

When we didn't eat at a park, dh would go pick up food from nearby and bring it back.

I'm not a fan of the Mara. It's fine for standard fare (chicken fingers, hamburgers, etc) but the rest leaves something to be desired (including breakfast). I did enjoy picking up zebra domes on my last trip, though.

Shelly- being that you'll be arriving late and the possibility exists that the Mara won't be open, why don't you ask your town car service for a stop at McDonald's or Taco Bell or something? Neither are far away (by Goodings), and I know Taco Bell has late hours. Wouldn't want you to get to the hotel starving only to find no food available! The AKL is a fabulous resort and you'll have a great time!

We usually arrive in the late evening when we visit. On more then one occasion even if it is printed in the hotel brochure the food court and room service is not available after 11. If your going to be arriving anywhere near 11pm I would get something before the hotel and not count on anything being open.

over by the drinks they have a microwave, we found the brkfst platter good for the adults (spicy potatoes, eggs and bacon) but we warmed up mcdonalds pancakes for the kids. buy your mugs, fill up and relax by the pool......you'll love it.....

There is a big McDonald's right after the turn to the All-Star/Animal Kingdom area. That may be your best bet if you want something convenient, if it stays open late.

The Mara was our only disappointment with AKL, which is our favorite resort. As we were checking out at 11:00 and being picked up at 12:15 p.m. to head to the airport, we decided to just grab something at the Mara for lunch. Very sorry we did! There were very few people ordering, yet it took us over 20 minutes to get our food. When they brought it out to us, DD's shrimp basket was not hot, or even warm. Though my African House salad had a good portion of chicken and a tasty dressing, it was all the white, bitter parts of the lettuce which made it nearly inedible. This mediocre meal cost us $20, for the shrimp basket, salad and a bottled water!:(

We ate there for a few breakfasts and a few dinners. Everything was great! DH loved the African stew in a bread bowl. I had great fish and chips, and the chicken pizza was tasty, too. Kids had typical stuff, pizza, chicken fingers, etc. and all was fine.

For breakfast, we normally grab a croissant, or pop tarts and these were available. But I also got the breakfast wrap and it was really well prepared.

Mara more than met our expectations for a "food court".

We LOVE Mara!!! We have never had any disappointments and DH swears they have the best burgers!!!! They really do have great food.

Does Mara sell yogurt without the granola? Also, do they have English muffins available for breakfast? I'm on Weight Watchers and this would really help me on my diet.
