Just returned from AKL and want to post my thoughts on the fitness center.

Like other dis board members who have posted here, I was a bit put off knowing that I had to pay extra to use the fitness facilities - particularly given the rates at AKL. I want to go on record that it was absolutely worth the fee (my DH and I paid $45 for family length of stay).

I travel A LOT for business and utilize the fitness facilities at many hotels. This is the first experience I have had with one that did not leave something to be desired!

First off - the center was CLEAN! The machines were first-rate and the employees (not Disney) were all friendly and knowlegeable. The locker rooms with saunas were also very nice. There are always plenty of fresh towels and they will supply you with earphones for the 4 television screens. There is also a cold water fountain in the middle of the gym.

They had Life Fitness cardio equipment (2 elliptical crosstrainers, 3 treadmills, 2 or 3 stairmasters and 4 or 5 bikes) and Cybex weight machines, as well as a free-weight area and a few other pieces of equipment. It is packed in a little tight, but that really didn't bother me.

While we were there, they were open from 6am until 9pm. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to take advantage of the massages offered, but other guests were commenting on how good they were.

Did they have shower facilities in the spa? If so, what were they like. Individual stalls w/ curtains or doors (I hope)? Mirrors, outlets in the area for getting ready? We have someone in our party who wants to work out in the mornings and volunteered to then shower and prepare for the day there so as to free up the bathroom in hotel room if possible.

Yes - they have shower facilities there. I didn't use them, but my husband did one afternoon after his workout so as not to disturb the napping children in the room. While the facilities were good - the shower was a little more invigorating than he would have liked as there was no hot water. After letting the water run for several minutes, he asked the attendant about it and was told that this is a regular problem and that it has to be turned on and run for quite a long time before it heats up. They told him something about how they need to run it for 20-30 minutes in the morning to ensure hot water later and apparently they hadn't done it that day. Didn't make a whole lot of sense to either one of us. Maybe they'll have this straightened out by the time you get there ...

When I see my husband later, I will ask him about the privacy issues and dressing areas and post again.

thank you for your response - except for the lack of hot water it sounds like a nice facility
