My family and I recently returned from our first AKL stay (the week prior to Presidents' Weekend), and it has become our favorite Disney hotel (previously, WL was tops!).

We booked a Standard ($139) through Small World Travel, and were upgraded to a Savannah (Uzima), with a free refrigerator. What an amazing hotel and room! The animals were always outside our window (Zebra, Wildebeest, Gemsbok, etc.), and I quickly became one of the apparently many husbands who would stand out on their balconies (shirtless, of course!) making animal sounds and responding to each others' animal sounds! We got this on video, and it's almost suitable for America's Funniest Home Videos. We ate at Boma, which was fantastic, although extremely crowded and about 1/2 hour late with our reservations (which for a 7:50pm reservation was a significant lateness). The hotel itself is beautiful, the transportation was never a problem, my kids loved the night vision animal viewing, and we can't wait to return!!!

If there were any negatives whatsoever, it was that there was some confusion re: our check-in time (our room was initially upgraded to Pool view, and at check-in we were told that a Savannah would be available in 1 hour, which ultimately became 5 hours (i.e., the standard 3pm check-in time), which became somewhat of an inconvenience for us, but was by our own choosing due to wanting the Savannah upgrade. Housekeeping was mildly inconsistent. All else was great!

PS: My opinion may differ slightly if we had the Standard view room, and now that we've had a Savannah view we can't imagine any other view, but the overall rating of the hotel itself remains fantastic!:Pinkbounc :bounce: :yo-yo: :wave2: :hyper:

I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed the AKL!:sunny: We will be there in Aug. for the first time and are very excited because we are all big animal lovers! We stayed at the WL last time and I've been a little worried because we loved it so much, but after your post and many others I'm sure we will LOVE AKL just as much!:D
Thanks so much for your report!!

Sounds awesome!! You really lucked out getting that savanna view:)
I'm headed back for Spring Break and can't wait.
Did your family enjoy any of the activities at the resort other than the Night Vision goggles?
How did you like the pool? Did you spend much time there?
How did you find the buses? Or, if you had your own car, did you use it much?
What inconsistencies did you have with housekeeping? Also, can you share your room number or what floor you were on?
Also, I am considering trying out the WL with some family members in August. Can you tell me what you preferred about AKL? Sorry for so many questions:rolleyes:
Thank you!!princess:

Tinkgrl, we will be there when you are!!! We went with Pool view this time but the SV is awsome! You will love it there...it gets pretty hot but the darker colors in the room cools it down a bit!

Isn't the AKL wonderful?!!! We are so in love with this resort, last Dec. while staying at the BC (a fabulous resort in it's own right) we couldn't help thinking we wanted to be at AKL!! That's pretty bad, when you plan your next WDW fix while still at WDW!!

It's our favorite resort! Isn't it wonderful...we are trying something different next time and I'm nervous! I guess we can always move!!!

We stayed there for the first time late Jan. We absolutely loved it, and are hoping to take the entire family next Jan. We have stayed at several other properties, but AKL is by far our favorite now. I would suggest a savannah view. The whole atmosphere is relaxing and we never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a bus. We also enjoyed breakfasts at Boma--we were hooked. Mara also had enough variety for us. Can't wait to go back.

We also stayed at AKL the week right before President's weekend. It was crowded everywhere. The resort was fulll on that Friday night. We loved AKL.....our first time there. I booked a Savanna room. The first room given us was a terrible view on the Sunset Savanna, so we went back to the front desk and requested another room. This time we were given Arusha Savanna, zebra trail......much better, but we never saw one giraffe. Plenty of other animals however. Considering the cost of the savanna view, I'm not sure I would book it again. There are so many places to view the animals besides your own balcony. Also, after hearing how many people are upgraded, I would risk a standard room and hope for an upgrade. The pool is fabulous, as well as Boma's and Mara's. I would definitely go back to the AKL, but I think the Polynesian will remain my favorite.

Hi,

I hear you! :) See you there!!!

We are going in July and can't wait. It is so good to hear such wonderful things about the resort.

We too have booked a standard room in hopes of getting a free upgrade to Savanah....just curious...what do you think my chances will be of upgrading in July???

I hope my chances are good. My kids would love to see the animals first thing in the morning!:) :)

From what I understand you have a better chance with a one level up upgrade...so if you are hoping for savannah you might want to consider booking a pool...not that it doesn't happen from standard..I think you just might have a better chance!

We're going in June. Have a standard view room, what will the crowds be like early to mid month? I have requested a bunkbed room, think we'll get one in the standard view room or will we get lucky and upgraded to get the bunks. What are the odds of getting both? (Bunks and a better view.) Are the food courts any more expensive than those at a moderate? We'll have a rental car, how long of a drive to the different parks. When should we leave to be on time for EMH?
How easy is it to get around by car? Thanks, YO

Coach>> Go to http://www.allearsnet.com/menu/menus.htm#res for a copy of Mara's menus.

Sorry, I can't help you with driving times, but bus times were fine and nothing out of the ordinary.

As far as room views, which are important to many of the posters. I can't say enough to please book the view you can't live without, then LOVE the PD that might arrive with an upgrade! :) Yes, there are many places to view the animals and the savannahs, but if you are set on watching them from your balcony, please make sure to book that room. That being said, when I took my mother in November, the only view left at FL res rate was pool view or standard. I booked poolview and we were upgraded! My last trip, I booked savannah view, knowing I couldn't live without "my savannah" being outside my window. Many people are happy without that view. To me it was why I booked the hotel to begin with.

Happy planning,
Debbie

I think it depends on how full the hotel is and what your other room requests are. Don't worry if you don't get a savanah view room, there are tons of spots around AKL to look at the animals :) The animals are also free to roam around the savanah so they won't always be right outside your room. On our first visit at AKL, there were hardly any animals outside of our room.
