AKL Deluxe Rooms -- Help, I'm Confused!

Hoping someone can straighten me out --- We are a family of 5 so . . . it's a deluxe room at AKL for us. Here come the questions.

Are all the deluxe rooms on the 5th floor? I understand we can book either a pool view (some cost savings) or savannah. Is this correct?

All concierge guests stay on the 5th & 6th floors - the majority on the 5th floor -- except we can only request a savannah room? We could end up in a pool view at the same rate? HUH??

The savannah view is the big attraction for us --( the kids keep replaying the planning DVD and a video featuring Flik in the Animal Kingdom). We have stayed concierge in the past and would definitely like to try AKL. I am wondering as we are traveling the last week of August (parks are much slower) if maybe we should book a deluxe savannah room and try to upgrade at check-in to Concierge? (We'd pay the difference) Has anyone tried this??

I've never tried to upgrade to concierge at check-in, I've always booked it. Here is the lowdown on deluxe rooms at the AKL. There are two types like you mentioned, savannah view and pool view,they are all located on the 5th floor. The concierge rooms are located on the 5th floor and 6th floor, but the pool view concierge rooms are all on the 6th floor and are all smoking optional. If you request a non-smoking concierge room, you'll most likely be on the 5th floor (only savannah concierge located here), and this actually is the floor to request when staying concierge. The rooms on the 6th floor with a savannah view all have somewhat obstructed views due to the roof lines. The 5th floor rooms are perfect and offer unobstructed views of the savannah. The only problem with the 5th floor concierge rooms are the distance to the concierge lounge. We were approx 2/3rds down the Kudu trail and it took us a good 5 - 8 minutes to make it up to the lounge with two kids in tow. All deluxe rooms (concierge or not) that sleep 5 people are a queen bed, bunk beds and a day bed, there is no other configurtion available (ie two queens and day bed). I'd never heard someone who REALLY wanted the savannah view with AKL concierge and not getting it. If you really want it, you'd probably just be on the 5th floor. Like I said, there really aren't all that many concierge pool view rooms, and they are all on the 6th floor. If I recall, out of the 60 or so concierge rooms, only like 10 have that pool view, and are smoking optional.

Another question.....so if we booked a savannah room (non-concerige), we would likely end up on the 3rd or 4th floor? And the lobby is on the 3rd floor? And the restaurants are below the lobby? (Guess I asked more than one question!)

Yes, the Lobby is on the third floor. The restaurants are on lower floors but are not "below" the lobby. They are next to the lobby at a lower level. Hope that helps to clear up some of your confusion!

Savannah view rooms (non deluxe and concierge) are located on the 2nd through 4th floors. The lobby is located on the 3rd floor, and all restaurants are located on the 1st floor, right near the entrance to the pool area.

That is great news about the room configuration --- the hardest part of vacationing for our family is the kids have a terrible time sharing a bed. DH and I don't even like to sleep with them anymore --- wiggly little bed hogs . Thank you for all the information. I love these boards!!!!!
