How much is the culinary tour & can kids participate?

It's free, and yes, kids can participate! I'll be doing this with my DD8 in 2 weeks and will report back here. :thumbsup2

I am so glad someone mentioned these activities. I never knew they existed. What great extras for the kids to do at the hotel, especially if the weather is not good. We were thinking of staying here or WL and this might help us decide. Thanks for the info!:thumbsup2

WL also has activities, I'm not sure what they are. We don't stay there as often as AK. I did see the kids making ginger bread houses once. I'm pretty sure a lot of the deluxes have activities. IMO AK has some of the best though.

Someone asked about the medallion activity. There is a big round, metel, African manhole looking thing, in the lobby. It has animals on it, and the kids get paper and a crayon to rub the different animals on thier paper.

but when DH and I took DS6 and DD5 in June, they really enjoyed doing "medallion rubbings" in the main lobby of AKL. So much so that they did it 3 times! For those unfamiliar with AKL, there are large decorative metal medallions on the floor of the main lobby. They each have a different African-themed animal motif. The children sit with CMs and use crayons to rub the patterns of the medallions onto paper.

Also, my children did a poolside craft one day. That was assembling a 5x7 craft foam photo frame, which they got to keep. Loved it!

There has not been a SINGLE day since we returned in late June that both kids have not mentioned their trip to AKL. They were as impressed with the hotel and all its activities and amenities as they were with the parks!!!!

I found this on the AKL info thread and thought I would post it here ..

WOW! This is the 1st time I've stayed at a Deluxe Resort (other than Swan if you count that) so I'm not used to really having any resort activities - this is great! We have several hours the day we arrive & the day we leave - I was planning to head to Downtown Disney but I think the kids (and myself!) will have much more fun staying at AKL.

Thanks CoolDisneyCat, for all the information. I think this is one of the things that is making me want to go to AK this year. Every year we say we will take it easy and not run around each park every day, and with all this to do we would not feel like we were missing out on anything! Thanks!

Thank you for all the great replies, we are looking foward to staying here next week and will use a bunch of these!

A big thanks to everyone who has contributed information!

As I noted earlier in the thread, I've been taking notes on all of the responses so that I could prepare a summary of the activities for easy reference. Here is what I have so far, complied from this thread as well as the official and unofficial AKL FAQ threads.

If anything has anything else to add, please do. I have descriptions of most things, but there are still some places that could use a bit of elaboration (especially garden safari, adventure camp, cultural safari, horticulture activity). I would also love to add approximate times to be set aside for each activity.

Animal Kingdom Lodge Activities

This is an example of activities. Times may vary. Activities will be posted in lobby. (Listed times are from 9/9/06.)

Children can collect beads for certain activities. The beads look like ladybugs, giraffes, pink flamingo balls, etc. and can be collected on a string necklace. After completing all bead activities, children get a totem pole bead.

Horticulture Activity - Arusha Rock (9:00 am , Every Wednesday)

Flamingo Activity - Flamingo Pond (9:30 am, Every day) Bead activity
This activity starts by teaching the children how flamingos and pelicans eat. The kids are divided into two groups and take turns with their “make believe” pelicans and flamingos “eating” food in tiny pools. Everyone has a turn. Following this, everyone gathers around the flamingo pond as a cast member feeds the flamingos. It is fun to watch! There is usually a “science experiment” that the kids are encouraged to help out with during this time. While this is for children, adults also learn something from watching and listening! Anyone may ask questions and the handler/feeders will be happy to answer. Do not miss!

Animal Tracking Activity - Arusha Rock (11:00 am – 1:30 pm, Every day) Bead Activity
A tracking device is placed in a stuffed animal and kids must try to find the animal.

Medallion Rubbing – Lobby (12:30 pm, Every day)
Kids make crayon rubbings of the large medallion on the lobby floor.

Cookie Decorating - Boma Restaurant (1:00 pm, Every day)

Garden Safari - Flamingo Pond (2:00 - 4:30pm, Every day) Bead Activity

Spirit of Africa Art Tour - Ogun’s Firepit (2:30 pm, Every day)
Tour of the hotel and artwork.

African Games or Crafts - Uzima Pool Deck (3:00 pm, Every day)
The activities vary and might include making bird houses, paper dolls, African rag dolls, etc. A small fee may be involved.

Culinary Tour of Africa - Jiko Podium (4:00 pm, Mon, Tues, Wed; 3:45, Fri, Sat, Sun)
The culinary tour starts off in Jiko, with an explanation of the decor and the firepit cooking. Then a chef goes into more detail about the cooking and menus than the initial guide did, and there is an appetizer tasting. After that, the tour moves on to Boma for a description of many of the dishes served and their origins. Very nice. Do early in trip. Approximately 45 minutes.

Family Fun and Games -Contact lifeguard for location (4:00 and 6:00 pm)
Pool games, relay races, treasure hunt, etc.

Music of the Savannah - Sunset Savannah Lounge (5:00 pm, Every day) Bead Activity
Kids pick a musical instrument. A storyteller tells a story, and each child plays his or her instrument at certain parts. By the end, all the instruments are usually playing at the same time. Adults may participate if there are not enough children. Lots of fun.

Wildlife Games - Sunset Savannah Lounge (6:30 pm, Every day) Bead Activity
There are pages of animals lying on the floor upside down so kids can’t see them. The leader explains that each card is an animal and that the person who is “it” will pick one. They put it on the person’s back and show the rest of the group. The person that is it is given a piece of paper that has a picture of about 16 animals and their names...it is in color and has detail. Then the person that is it gets to ask questions that are yes and no (leader helps) such as “Do I have feathers?” The group answers yes or no based on the question. It is a process of elimination and a neat game for kids.

African Folktales - Arusha Rock Firepit (7:30 pm, Every day)
This activity takes place around the Arusha firepit. Stories vary and may be geared towards children or both children and adults depending on the storyteller. Storyteller may also let participants ask questions about life in Africa. Very interesting and entertaining.

Primal Parade - Zawadi Marketplace (7:50 pm, Every day)
Kids select a musical instrument and parade around the lobby.

Cultural Safari - Sunset Lounge (8:30 pm, Every day)

Animal Viewing With Night Vision - Uzima Savannah (9:00 – 11:00 pm, Every day)
DO THIS! Take a few minutes out of your vacation some evening. First look out onto the dark savannah. Of course you see nothing. Look through the night vision goggles, and the savannah comes to life!

Ceramics Class - Simba's Clubhouse (12:00 pm – 2:00 pm, Tues, Thurs)
All ages welcome. There is a fee for the activity (no price was listed)

Adventure Camp (10:00am-2:00pm, Saturdays)
For ages 6-14. Cost is $70.00 . Includes private safari, lunch, ostrich egg painting.

Hidden Mickeys (on your own)

In the main entrance to the lobby between the outer and inner doors is a mural on the wall of a large creature. One of the spots on it is Mickey Mouse.

Enter the lobby and look at the 2nd chandelier on the right side. The light is made up of objects that look like shields. One of the shields has a pattern of circles running up its center. The second from the bottom circle is a hidden Mickey.

On the wall in Rock formation on the staircase leading from Lobby to Boma Restaurant.

On any of the floor except for 1 and 6, there and big wooden poles that “keep the floor up.” There are three poles with create a great Mickey Mouse picture.

On the back of the rocks that support the slide for the swimming pool are two Mickey's. Both are about 3 feet off of the ground.

Look at the bedspreads.

Here is some info on these:

Cookie Decorating - Boma Restaurant (1:00 pm, Every day)

They already have the cookies ready. They provide icing in tubes (about 4 or 5 colors) and a few other things like sprinkles, etc. The kids pick what/how much icing, etc. and decorate a cookie. Depends on what you kids pick and how fast they are ... have seen some kids done in 30 seconds and other take up to 15 minutes.

Garden Safari - Flamingo Pond (2:00 - 4:30pm, Every day) Bead Activity

When you come up they give you a piece of paper that has laminate over it. On it they describe numerous plants that are to be found on the grounds around the pool area. Your job is to find each one of the "garden items" and put an X through them. When you have found all of them you return the card to the host. This took my DH and DS(then 7) about 20-25minutes. Can take longer or shorter depending on how quickly you find things. If you are having problems you can return to the Flamingo Pond and they will give you hints.

Not an update, just an addition.

Re the flamingo feeding: We really enjoyed this. Yes, you yourself don't get to feed the flamingos, but the CMs who are feeding them talk about the flamingos and answer questions from the onlookers. It was fascinating and entertaining, and you're inches away from the birds and the CMs.

Re the cultural safari: I don't think anyone else on this thread gave details on this, so here goes. First off, this may not be an activity for young children. It all depends on the children and the CM giving the talk.

We went to a cultural safari during our last stay at AKL in 2003. A CM from South Africa gave a talk on what it was like in his home country, describing the details of daily life, where he lived, what his home and neighborhood were like, things of that nature. Other than my DH and myself, there was only one other couple at the cultural safari, iirc. We all got to ask loads of questions and the CM was very accommodating. Quite enjoyable.

Thhanks for the additions regarding flamingo feeding and the cultural safari. Are there any updated times? For example, does the time for the firepit storytelling change now that the sun sets earlier? We had been told the time would be 6:30 pm for our Jan. trip and I wanted to make sure that was right.

The only thing I can add to your list was that we've done the night vision viewing at Arusha Rock on the Arusha Savannah, too. These activities are why we love AKL! There is always something to do here. A great fallback plan for a rainy day on vacation!

Bumping in hopes of any current updates! :)

We were there in January, and all of the most recent information on this thread was accurate. We didn't actually participate in as many activities as I thought we would, but the two that we did do were a huge hit with my 3-year-old!!

FYI, They list the activities and times next to the bell services, but they also have them on the 'AKL Channel' in your room...that was how we confirmed most of the times for the activities.

HTH!!

~Kimber

The activities at the lodge don't really change ... they have pretty much been the same for several years. Be sure to check the times, though, when you check in as they might change.

During the holidays (Christnas) they do add a few seasonal activiites. For example, one year we paid $3 and my DS made a Christmas Ornament using ostrich eggs, etc. It was a keeper .. and goes on the tree every year. So, if you are traveling at those times of the year (maybe Easter or Halloween, too) they may add an activity but otherwise there isn't much change.

Can someone give any feedback on the Spirit of Africa art tour? How long and was it interesting? Was this different from the cultural safari, what exactly do you do on that one? thanks.

Does anyone know the current schedule for the culinary tour? My daughter and I had a great time doing it last year, and are both looking forward to it on our trip next week. Thanks.
I just did it on 9/7. The board said that it was at 4:00 on Sunday through Thursday, then at 3:45 on Friday and Saturday. However, when we got there for 3:45, the CM said that the tour would start at 4:00. However, when we went to Boma, it was only a few minutes before opening, so the CM there kind of rushed through the explanation. However, he did make sure we got our free zebra dome and soup!
