Thinking of Akershus in Epcot for our 1st lunch at WDW end of Feb. Just DW & I ( one each side of 50). We enjoy different foods and had enjoyed Akershus before. I thought I heard there were changes in the way they are serving now. Is it still a full buffet? Or do you select fro the menu? Or any other thoughts on an Epcot restaurant suggestion? Thanks

We've been at dinnertime since they changed the procedure. I suppose it is the same at lunchtime. It is a regular buffet for all the cold food. You order the hot food from the menu - as much as you want but one dish per person at a time. This is all included in the set price. Still as delicious as ever, still a great deal.

Yes. They do lunch in the same way as at dinner. The cold buffet is about the same with all the delicious salads, cheese, breads and sliced meats. For the hot entres you choose off of a menue and the item is prepared and brough to your table. The hot items seem to be quite different from what was offered on the buffet from the past. There are less items to choose from on the hot menue but the food seemed much more fresh and I liked the two items I had. While choosing from the buffet allowed you to sample small amounts of things I still like the new way better because the quality is better.

Hi, sam08223!

Akershus was always one of our favorite lunch places and while the cold portion is as great as it ever was, we weren't happy with the removal of the hot portion of the buffet and changing to ordering entrees. Each person is allowed one entree order at a time plus the table can have an order of "Vikings Favorites" which included a meatballs in gravy, mashed rutabagas, mixed vegetables and boiled new potatoes. Since all we wanted was the mashed rutabagas, we ended up with a great deal of food going to waste.

The entrees take about 20 minutes to arrive and you can order another entree only after the one your ordered arrives and that takes 20 minutes too. Our entrees were lukewarm and we didn't like having to spend so much time waiting to get a second entree. Oh, and we only found out from seeing other people receive soup that you can order soup too (our waiter forgot to tell us). The soup was cream of onion and that was hot and excellent.

I know we are a bit spoiled(smile), since we can have great Norweigian food whenever we want, but I really wish that Akershus would go back to hot buffet food. Although friends have told me that one of the main reasons they switched is that it cuts down on their costs...many people won't sit and order entree after entree because they don't want to spend so much time at a restaurant.

Oh what!??! We used to eat at Akershus every trip, without fail. Last year we stumbled upon it just a week or so after they changed over to their new format, and they didn't offer a "Vikings Favorite" thing.

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with the new format. While the hot food is indeed fresh, the portions are HUGE and it takes forever to come out. I much preferred getting to sample just a small bit of *almost* everything. ;)

that's interesting indeed...I didn't eat there the last time down because all I saw on the bar was the cold/pickled stuff...I didn't realize that you could even get hot food...that may change my mind about this place next time down..

I do not dispute any of the observations of the above posters. Akershus may be doing a bit of tweaking to their way of serving the hot dishes.

When we were there in November, the portions were intentionally small so that you could sample more than one entree. Each person at the table could order Viking Favorites if they desired, and could tell the server to leave something off the platter. You could have also received rutabagas only. And it certainly did not take 20 minutes to order another entree. It may have been 5-10 minutes, but no more than that.

We found the food to be much fresher than when it was served on the buffet.
