Akershus for Boys?

Can anyone tell me if this is too girly for little boys? We ate at CRT in October 2010 and they loved it - they came out of there covered in lipstick and glitter after all the princesses got ahold of them, so they bragged all day.

My kids like a few of the princesses (my youngest loves Belle and likes "the mermaid" and my oldest likes Ariel and Cinderella and asked if we could eat with one of them and eat at Chef Mickey's) so I'm basically asking if I should do CRT again or is Akershus just as good?

If you do recommend Akershus, do you prefer breakfast, lunch or dinner?

I wouldn't think one princess meal would be any more "girly" than another- if they did CRT and loved it, why the concern over another meal with female characters? From your description, it sounds like they like princesses just fine! I'd say go for it. Akershus is fun- I've done breakfast and dinner, both were very good.

Thanks! I forgot to mention that one of the reasons they loved CRT was that they got swords (and I know those aren't available at Akershus). I've also heard the decor and feel at Akershus was geared more toward girls, but I had no idea how true that was since I've never been there.

I don't think the decor at Akershus is more girly -- it's like the inside of a Norwegian castle. Since there are several princesses there it might be perfect, although the only thing they'll get is their picture with a princess, probably Belle, at the door.

Breakfast is just breakfast, but lunch and dinner are basically Norwegian fare (which we really love but apparently some do not). Either is great and I'd decide based on what you want to eat.

Thanks! Now I'm interested to see the inside if it looks like a Norwegian castle :). My kids can be adventurous in some of the things they eat, but since it sounds like all the meals are good, I'll pick whatever meal is good for that day instead of basing the day around the reservation :). Thanks again!

We did both, when our DS was young. He loved CRT. It was mostly because he was in the castle. He also liked being treated like a little prince. ;) For us, PSB was just breakfast with princesses stopping by. He wasn't as thrilled with that one. The restaurant itself was what really made the difference. To us, Akershus didn't have the true castle feel that CRT did. We've only been to each one once. I guess you'll never know, until you try it for yourself.

Can you buy cheap plastic or foam swords to bring with and give to them at Akershus? I can't imagine they cost much.

I'm thinking I saw them at POTC...so world of disney would also have them. Good plan if that will make their day :thumbsup2

Good idea, Sunny! Although I don't think they'll be so disappointed about the lack of swords that it will be an issue - I was just thinking if it was a girly girl restaurant, that would "Boy" it up a bit :). It doesn't sound like that's the case though, so I'll be making a reservation as soon as my 180 days opens up.

We did Akershus with our twin 4 yr olds last january and we loved it. One son is afraid of characters (and it was our first day, so he hadn't eased into them yet). the other hugged each character and talked to her. he brought is Beast doll and Beauty LOVED it. The food was good (I had mushroom ravioli - and hate mushrooms - but LOVED IT). They also loved the 1900 park fare supper. They loved that more because of prince charming and the hilarious sisters and stepmom.

the decor isn't girlie at all. Just castle setting.

I agree with the above. We've had lunch (very good) and had the best character interaction of any---including CRT. We had a 6 yr old boy in our party and the princesses were so cute with him. He's shy--but still had a blast. The next best character interaction we had was at the GG (not princesses). In both cases, the characters spent a lot of time with each child in spite of both locations being very busy.princess:

Thanks for the food rec! I love mushrooms, so I'll be on the lookout for that one :). We're planning on the 1900 Park Fare supper (we tried breakfast one year and enjoyed it) but that's mainly for my mom, if she can go with us. She's been a Cinderella nut since the movie was first released, so I think she would really enjoy that one and my parents have never done a character dinner at WDW. I didn't even know about them until we went on our first family trip in 2010! *Fingers crossed they can go for a few days*

That's good news - my youngest son loves the characters, but he's a little shy around the face characters, so I think he would enjoy it. We are hoping to go to GG on our first night after checking in - we've never eaten there and I've heard wonderful things!

Our son was just 1 month shy of his 3rd birthday when we at here. He LOVED the princesses! He wore a shirt that said "Prince Charming in Training - Hugs and Kisses welcome" and the princesses loved him too. He still brings it up over a year later. The decor was nice without being girly.

What an adorable picture! I saw a few Prince Charming shirts last year and I think I'll have a local store make a couple before we leave this year - too cute :).

The girls in our house very much outweigh the boys so we've been to Akershus twice in past 4 yrs with DS (now 10). It's actually DH's favorite breakfast. DS enjoys it, its good food and really, that's all boys care about. He gets up and takes pictures and gets signatures and blushes every now and then but he doesnt mind it at all. May I add, my boy is all boy. Baseball, skateboarding, constantly a hole in his jeans

We're taking our 2 boys (ages 2 and 4) there in April. I think they'll love it! My 4 year old LOVES the princesses! I went to Youtube and searched for videos of breakfast there. The inside of the castle didn't look "girly" at all IMO.

We took our 3 boys, ages 2, 6 and 7 last month and we LOVED the food (you MUST get the mushroom ravioli, it's so good!). They aren't really into princesses, but I thought my 2 yr old might like it. Let's just say that at least he did not cry. He cried at every character meal, except this one, b/c they weren't wearing big headed costumes, lol. My boys were all bashful though around the princesses. Snow white was our favorite one, she was the only one who really spent some time with my boys. The only, "bad" thing is that if you have all boys and no girls, they seat you all the way in the back, in a corner. I know, b/c the table next to us was all boys too, so I do not feel that this was a coincidence. I didn't mind though, since DS3 was very cranky, I preferred to be tucked away to the side so that we weren't in the middle of the room and being bothersome to other tables. The picture you get with Belle is great, we were surprised at the quality of the picture AND it is one of the only pictures of our entire family where DS3 isn't crying. The food was excellent, we really enjoyed it and the service was excellent. Of all the ADRs we had, Ohana was our favorite for food and character involvement (this is the character meal we went to where my kids got the most 1-1 attn), but the food was the best at Akershus. Boma was also a favorite. Tusker House bkfst is a good one for boys too. We did not like Crystal Palace, we never even got to see Pooh or Eyore, they were supposed to come to our table and then suddenly disappeared and we waited for about 10 min (we were finished eating), so left. The food was ok, nothing anymore special than a Golden Corral. Kona dinner was a disappointment, it did not live up to the hype, if I go back there again, it will be for bkfst.

Our family has ate at both CRT and Akershus. We had breakfast at Akershus 4 times and enjoyed each meal. We are not big fans of Norweign food so that's why we picked breakfast each time. I have 2 sons 7 & 1 and 5yr old daughter. The characters have always been great with the boys and 7 year old always has fun! We are eating at CRT in March since it's been awhile and boys excited about getting swords again!
