Can anyone tell me when the best time to see the silverbacks at AK is? And wher in the park are they? TIA

We've always been lucky enough to see at least one in the mornings at AK. :teeth:

They are on the Pagnani Forest Exploration trail - behind glass viewing area of course! There is a guide that answers questions and explains their habits, etc.

Actually they were kind of spooky to me - almost human-like, especially when grooming (my DH scratches the same way! :rotfl2: )

Here's a link to a map:

I hope I'm getting this right. DH is the gorilla fan.

The adult male gorillas are kept in two areas. The Big Daddy gorilla is with the family group. He can usually be seen either in the gorilla room or out on the trail in the area on your right. First thing in the morning the gorilla-keeping castmembers usually put a pile of browse with fruit and things buried in it right next to the glass in the gorilla room. We've seen Big Daddy there many times rooting through the browse for the fruit. There's some reason that they bury the goodies in the browse but I wasn't paying attention when DH was talking to the CM. You can get really up close here although there's a glass(?) barrier between you (Thank God) and the gorilla.

When you enter the outside walkway look to your left. Here you'll find the bachelor group. The last time we were there a couple of these males looked like they're getting a bit silvery. On the right is the family group which includes the Big Daddy gorilla as well as the females, juveniles and any babies.

Hope I've got this right. DH is the big animal guy and I dont always give the nature trails the attention I'm sure they deserve.

a little off topic but two of 'our' lowland gorillas at Busch Gardens just celebrated the first live birth in the park's history recently. he's 4 months old now. here's a pic of mommy and son:
