AK security lines

We're going to WDW in late September and I'm just fine-tuning our touring plans. We are considering getting a little bit of a later start on our Animal Kingdom day (arriving around 10:15 rather than rope drop), but I'm wondering if the wait times at security might make us late for our mid-morning plans. I read that it can take quite awhile to enter MK if you arrive around 10, but wasn't sure if there would be similar problems at AK. I want to make it to a 10:30 show of Flights of Wonder with the kids and my husband and in-laws have 10:05-11:05am Fastpasses for Kali River Rapids. We can't really push those back because we have our other FP+ lined up right after that.

What do you guys think? If we arrive at the park around 10-10:15 would we make it back to Flights of Wonder/Kali in time?

Kali is not a problem as they will let you into the line by 11:20

I would think you would need to be through bag check earlier than 10:15 to make FOW. It's a long walk, and groups of guests in DAK are notorious for stopping in the middle of any path to look at an animal, or just to figure out where in the world they are.

The most time it's taken me to get through a security check was fifteen minutes and that's because my husband was pulled over for the second time that day to go through the scanner and he wanted to speak to a supervisor and I had to wait.

We arrived at AK around 11am yesterday after doing the Sense of Africa tour at AKL (incredible, btw!).

It took us about 15min to get through security. They were having EVERYONE go through the metal detectors, but that part is fast. It is bag check that has become MUCH more intensive than ever before (at least the last 11yrs for us) -- that's what takes time.

We walk FAST... I mean FAST. We'd make our way through from AFTER security to FOW in 15min easily... assuming we do a lot of weaving through the crowds. BUT, factoring in 15min for security, I'd personally want to arrive by 10 for a 10:30 FOW.

Even with the added security, it only takes up about 15-20 minutes. Just make sure to factor in that time for the security line.

It never bothers me, I rather them have the added security because you never know what people are capable of these days.

You'll be perfectly fine with what you have planned. AK lines aren't normally long. For me, it takes longer to get to Kali from the entrance than usual security lines.

I agree with MickeyMinnieMom--I was at AK on Monday. The bag check lines were more intense than I've seen in 10+ years and everyone was sent through metal detectors. It made for a LOT of confusion and back up as people without bags tried to meet up with their parties. THe metal detector lines ran perpendicular to bag check lines, so there wasn't real flow. And then don't forget the lines at the admission turnstiles...

Also make sure your loose change and etc is in a bag and not pockets. Also, be sure you don't have a selfie stick, toy guns, etc. They split metal detectors based on the flow of the day. DH works in security and they try to make it fun and painless.

Totally agree. The husband (now stopped at last "count" 70% of the time) will not put any change or car keys in his pockets and removes his wallet and put that into his bag before we leave the resort room. Pain in the you know where to do this and he then has to transfer everything back into his pockets only to repeat when we change parks.

So, scan everyone or just do something else so everyone has the same procedure. Him - 70% of the time. Me - nothing. And we are always together.
