Just talked to my dh who is flying home from Baltimore. He got to the airport to find check-in a mess due to Airtran's reservations system being down. Give them kudos though, they were very organized and able to handle it....much better than other airlines that cancel on their flights in similar circumstances (ie. USAir a couple of months ago).
DH's Baltimore experience:
at check-in they called people into line by the flight that was leaving next, giving everyone a chance to get checked in manually, rather than missing their flight due to long lines
no seat assignments: boarding was along the lines of SWA (I guess this kept things moving along)
his flight was overbooked by 2 people; they played Let's Make a Deal at the gate to find 2 people willing to be bumped.
First round: 1 r/t flight (not the segments Airtran usually uses, but full r/t flight)....no takers
Second round: 3 r/t flights.....again, no takers
Third round: 5 free r/t flights.....aha! People were standing in line to be bumped.
Hope things went as well for other travellers. DH is back on the ground again and on his way home, not even terribly late.
