Airtran Luggage Question

Does Airtran give you the option to pre-pay for your luggage (when you check in online) @ a reduced rate? I know some of the other airlines offer it - but I cant find anything on their website.

Also, it says you can take one carry one + one personal item. What constitutes a personal item? What about for men? Do I need to buy my son a man-purse ;)

TIA

I don't recall there being a discounted rate back in July, but I can't say for certain.

Personal item would be a purse/messenger bag. The kids carried small backpacks as theirs. Laptop case also counts. As would a camera case. Shopping bag too.

Hope that helps.

pretty much anything small enough to fit under the seat in front of you can count as a personal bag. I have three things, my carry on, book bag, and my bear. Bear sits on my lap, bookbag under the seat and carry on overhead.

The rate is the same weather you pay online or at the airport. Your personal item can be a purse, laptop, etc. I have seen some pretty large "personal and carryon items" that probably should have been checked by Airtran's standards. The flights they let it go on were not full. However, when they have full flights, they are much more strict.

If only Southwest flew to ATL.

Can you pay for bags in advance? We have a credit because our flight price dropped and I'd love to use it for our bags.

I just came home from a cruise late last night, flying on AirTran, and yes, you can prepay your luggage fees when you check-in online. There are no reduced fees for pre-paying (it is $15 per bag no matter when you pay for it), but it is convenient. If you opt to wait and pay your baggage fees at the airport, you can pay via credit card or cash.. On our flight to Galveston last Wednesday, I prepaid our baggage fees when I did my online checkin. When we flew home yesterday, I had not had an opportunity to do online checkin, so I just checked in at the airport and paid my $15 luggage fee in cash.

I find AirTran to be fairly lax about the 2nd personal item. Typically it is a backpack, purse, laptop bag, or shopping bag (people coming back from trips with all sorts of items the purchased). The 2nd item needs to fit under the seat in fromt of you.

Except that's three carry-on items, and the airlines only allow two. NOT reprimanding the quoted poster, simply pointing out so others reading this thread won't be upset when they're restricted to two items.

I don't know - DOES the bear count as a third item? Is it anything like a pillow? I do know pillows don't count, so maybe that is how it makes it on without a problem.

How big is this bear, PP?
