I have United flights for June. They were booked back at the end of November. I have had more changes on this United itinerary (about 10), than I ever have had on Airtran. Most of the changes have been minor time or equipment changes. I have lost my seat assignment nearly every time and have had to reselect my seats.

Now, I am very diligent and I check my itinerary nearly daily, so I am catching these changes and making sure I have a seat. Honestly, this is a solo trip and I could sit on the wing for all I care, but I always think of the families here on the DIS who don't check their flights and are then surprised when their seating assignments are gone.....

Always pays to keep an eye on your flights.....

I'm always surprised that people are amazed that airlines make changes. Airline schedules change regularly. The OAG which is the official flight guide comes out monthly and there are many changes in each one. Itineraries vary due to demand. For example, during spring break demand is much different to some locations than it is other times of the year. Not only do times change, but types of aircraft are changed. When you book a flight, you are really booking the flight number and can't expect the time to stay the same, especially the farther out you book. Most changes are only by 10-15 minutes, but sometimes flights are cancelled and combined with other flights if they know they can't fill all the seats. But, the schedule published monthly usually stays the same for the entire month (as stated in the guide as some flights have changes midway through the month).

Yes, these things happen. I fly United all the time and they don't make time changes nearly as often as some airlines (I'm talking about you Delta).

I'm amazed that, after years of experience as to what days are busier, that the airlines haven't come up with a schedule that does not need many changes although it could be different for each day to begin with.

Maybe because dates for certain events change (spring break, Easter, Thanksgiving, etc) and whether it occurs over a weekend or during the week, etc. It's not that simple.
