Has anyone flown AirTran out of MCO lately?

I am considering booking a flight out of MCO to DTW for my son.

Unfortunately he has a severe peanut allergy.

Does anyone know if AirTran serves peanuts on their planes?

I have an email into them asking but wondered if anyone here would know the answer.

Thanks.

It was pretzels when we flew in October...Come to think of it, I think it's been pretzels every time we've flown Airtran over the last few years.

We flew Airtran in September, and on our flight out it was some type of cookie, and pretzels on the flight home. It sounds pretty standard. Just make sure the flight attendents know, I have heard some airlines will check the plane over for peanut traces in seats, etc. before an allergic passenger gets on. Just a thought.

Thank you for the quick replies.

I had totally forgotten about the possibility of peanuts on the plane, he hasn't flown in a few years.

I know any airlines that I have flown on lately have served pretzels or nothing at all.

We just flew home yesterday and it was a cookie, tasted like graham cracker type. I put one in one of the carryons, if I find it I will list the ingredients for you.

I know the airlines have switched from peanuts to pretzils in the last few years...but,what happens if another passenger brings his or her own peanuts to eat on the plane? :guilty:

It may be impossible for the airline to completely eliminate any peanut traces but they can certainly be minimized. With an airline like AirTran that has assigned seating, the crews should be able to clean the area around where the family will be seated -- tray tables and seats of the row and neighboring rows.

Best thing to do that people have suggested before is to contact the airline at several points. First, contact them ahead of time, and then make sure the airline has some notation when you check in for the flight. The airline should make an announcement regarding a passenger with a severe peanut allergy and request that no peanut products be consumed on board. That doesn't mean that everyone will comply, though, but anyone with an ounce of compassion will.

Thanks for the information everyone.

I have received an email reply from AirTran saying that they do not serve peanuts on any of their flights. Of course they can not guarantee that others will not bring them onboard.

They will as Obi-Wan has suggested make an announcement before the flight asking people to refrain from eating peanuts while in flight, if we wish.

The odd person here or there eating peanuts will not be a major problem. The problem would be if an entire airplane full of people opened peanut packages at the same time.

My son is not severely reactive to the "smell" of peanuts although the smell does affect him.

My son is 22 years old, a certified nurse and a few months away from being a certified paramedic. He is quite capable of speaking up about his allergy if he finds it necessary. That is a good thing because it will be just him and his 18 year old sister flying together this time.

Thanks again for all of your help. I knew I could count on DISers to have quick answers to my question. :teeth:

My DS 5 also has a peanut allergy. We just flew AirTran in November. They did serve pretzels, but the manufacturer does post a warning "may contain traces of peanuts." Needless to say, DS did not eat the pretzels.

mom22boys, you always have to read those ingredient lists for those disclaimers don't you. :confused3

It is only a 2 1/2 hour flight, I'm thinking he can survive that long without food (not that he'd agree with that of course) or he can bring himself a snack onboard ;)

Thanks for the info safetymom. It sounds like they have many different snacks that they serve on AirTran.
