Airtran gate check question

This is probably a stupid question...but is there a charge on Airtran (or any airline I guess) to gate check a stroller? Because technically, it becomes a piece of checked luggage.

Just trying to plan for unexpected expenses.

We have never paid to gate check a stroller on airtran or any other airline.

We did'nt pay to gate check out stroller with Airtran.

It is free. I emailed a last week asking if I could check a stroller at the check-in desk in a box for free (we don't need it in the airport) and was told that it is indeed free as well as long as I don't put anything other than the stroller in the box.

Just came back from Fl on Airtran yesterday.There is no charge for a stroller or car seat....they travel free............
