Anyone have any idea why airtran is canceling the majority of their flights today for pilots not showing up to fly? My parents are trying to fly back to Orlando and had 2 flights cancelled by them today for lack of pilots, and they had to buy new tickets through Southwest to get out of BWI. They told my Dad they could not get them home until the 14th of January. Any one else having any issues today? My mom met one woman headed to New Orleans for her wedding and she was crying as she was not going to be able to make it...

I can't find anything about this on the Internet at all. I also went to the flight status section of BWI's website and while there are delays and cancellations across multiple airlines, Air Tran also has many flights that have taken off and that are showing as on-time and scheduled to take off in the next 30 minutes.

Are you sure that the problem was Air Tran and pilots and not weather in another city or part of the country? As noted above, there are delays and cancellations on other airlines also through BWI.

If you go to this website http://www.flightstats.com/go/Home/home.do - you will see that Atlanta is experiencing significant delays and Orlando is experiencing moderate delays as is BWI and New Orleans (or at least they were at the time when I posted this.)

Yes, my parents were told that all of the delays and cancellations for Airtran today were due to pilots not showing up, and it wasn't just BWI, it was many airports that were flying airtran flights. Also, they were giving out vouchers and refunding passengers what they paid for their flights so they could rebook on other airlines, so definately not weather related, but it definately is pretty quiet for news about it on the internet.

There is no chatter about this at all on the internet, or on FlyerTalk, where you better believe complaints would be posted if this were true. This must have been an isolated incident; AirTran has not canceled a majority of their flights today.

NorthWest did this to us once in the aftermath of a snowstorm when we were trying to get out of Detroit after a 24 hour weather delay. The announcement made was that the copilot hadn't shown up but when one of the grounds crew came into warm up (it was frigid) he let it be known to some of us that it was actually an unofficial rotating strike. Not happy......

I don't think this is the case with what the OP posted as Air Tran pilots just voted on and accepted a new contract in November of 2010. The new contract took affect on December 1st. Here is one link about it http://www.ajc.com/business/airtran-pilots-approve-new-746932.html but if you google it you will find many more.

I have been looking all over the internet about this (we are flying Airtran in 5 days so it made me nervous) and I don't see anything about this. I am guessing it was a very isolated incident.

Looks like 2 out of 10 Airtran flights out of BWI were cancelled yesterday, both were non-stops. NO flights were cancelled out of BWI today. Doesn't appear to be wide spread.

FYI, NO AIRTRAN FLIGHTS were cancelled out of MSP yesterday or today.....
