Now we know what times we are looking at for our June 2012 vacation
.
I know that AT is notorious for changing their times, but I will say, in the past 5 times I've flown with them, they have not changed any of our flights by more than 20 minutes. So, I know that they can (and probably will) tinker with the schedule, but we have to plan based on what we know now, not on what "might" happen.
That being said, I'm looking for some opinions, particularly from those who have traveled with young children/infants.
Ideally, we'd like to fly out of Grand Rapids. It is small and only 15 minutes away. Right now, the non-stop flight (and non-stop is non-negotiable for this trip) is scheduled to depart at 7:45am. Since the GR airport doesn't even open until 5am, I am confident that this flight will not get moved any earlier. The issue I am concerned with is not getting everyone to the airport at 6am (the kids will be too excited to sleep anyways....me too!), but rather what we will do when we arrive at the resort before noon. We are staying in (2) 2BR's at OKW (15 people total, 4 families) and if at least one room isn't ready, we could be stuck with ornery, tired children with nowhere to rest. I'd thought about the pool, but the hours between noon and 4pm in the middle of June could be a problem with heat and possible rain.
The other option on the table is to drive to Detroit the night before, get a good night of sleep and fly out on the 11:30am non-stop. This option would put us in Orlando around 2:00pm and the resort around 3:30pm. This would be a better option as far as times are concerned, for our inbound flight. The downside is the return flight option. There are 2 non-stops from MCO to DTW. One leaves at 10:30am (and nobody wants to be waiting from DME at 7:30am!) and the other leaves at 4:15pm. On the surface, the later flight seems ideal, but flying for 2.5 hours and then following it up with a 2.5 hour drive home doesn't appeal to me, especially since we wouldn't be home until after 9pm. Staying the night in Detroit and driving home in the morning is not an option for this trip.
So, WWYD?
...take the ultra-early, local flight and hope that at least one room is ready upon check in?
...drive across the state to take a flight with better times?
...or...
I've also looked into driving to Detroit in rental cars (one-way) which would cost about $250 for 4 vehicles. Then, we could fly back into GRR and pick up our personal vehicles from the airport. This would be a more expensive option, but still fits in the budget.
Thoughts???
