Airtran Expiring Credits

Does anyone know if travel just has to be booked before the credits expire or does it have to be completed?

Booked - I just booked some reward flights over the weekend for travel in October. As soon as I got done booking, my oldest credits were used, leaving only the most recently acquired credits.
