I know I have seen threads before about airports near DL, but I can't find them. Can anyone please refresh my memory on which airports are near DL besides LAX and if you have a preference or experience with one?

Thanks
Robin

john wayne SNA

long beach LGB

they are the 2 closest then there is BUR burbank, LAX and ONT ontario

We have traditionally flown in to SNA but this year we are saving almost $600 for 4 tickets by going into Longbeach. It's less than 5 miles further than SNA. I would have never thought of it until I kept hearing about LGB from the DIs. So to check prices, I got on Expedia and checked to see which airport was the cheapest. Then I booked directly through the airline. The price was the same but I like having the direct contact with the airline.

Last year we flew in/out of LAX. Personally I wasn't too impressed with it. It just wasn't CLEAN! This year we will fly in/out of SNA. I hope to like it better and it is a lot closer. I think it took us 2 hours to get from L.A. to Anaheim.

We always fly into Long Beach - it's less than 30 minutes away from the Disneyland Resort. It's a very small, very efficient airport.

We fly into LAX from Spokane on Alaska. It's the same old terminal we flew from when I grew up in CA in the
60's. :hippie:

It is as clean as any airport and because of the times that we fly takes about 35 minutes from the car rental to DLR. Not to mention much, much better connections and prices for us.

ONT was much longer drive and much more traffic. SNA is harder to connect but check your own options.

I've got an airport thingy I wrote to refer to; I'll cut and paste it here. I left out Burbank, kind of because I'd read that the traffic is so horrible around there (even for bad CA traffic), it's not a good alternative.

Avalon's airport info thingy:

Start checking your airfare as far in advance as possible. There are four possible airports to fly into, and they all have pros and cons.

LAX, approx. 35 miles away: pros, often the cheapest and has the most flights and times available, Disney Resort Express bus runs on a frequent and convenient schedule. Cons, can be expensive for ground transportation because it’s the farthest away; it’s your typical huge, dirty, loud international airport.

ONT, Ontario: approx. 30 miles away: pros, often fairly cheap to fly into, not as big. Cons, ground transportation can be pretty expensive since it’s quite a distance. Can take a long time for travel to/from.

SNA (also known as Orange County or John Wayne airport) approx 12 miles away: pros, the closest airport, small, yet very nice and convenient. Disneyland Express also runs here. Taxis are $40 flat fee to DL hotels; but the flat fee doesn't apply on the return trip unless your hotel can give you a coupon for it. Cons: it’s usually the MOST expensive of all the airports. Don’t know why, but it costs us over $100 or more extra, per person, to fly into SNA.

LGB, Long Beach, approx 14 miles way: the choice of many. It is a small, clean, quaint airport (you deplane down stairs onto the tarmac!) and nearly as close as SNA; yet it can cost considerably less to fly into. Renting a car is particularly easy here; the counters are right next to baggage claim and the cars are right there, too. Cons: ground transportation can cost more here; Super shuttle is 3x as much for some reason, although a taxi will cost you the same as from SNA ($40 flat fee one way). Disneyland Express doesn’t operate from here.

Hope that helps! :)

I read your original post and thought to myself, gosh I aksed this same question a month or so back and Avalon had a VERY helpful response. I was going to reply and suggest you search my user name to see if you coudl get to the post or I would also try myself....but in try DIS fasion I see Avalon has provided for you the most useful respons I have found for those of us looking for generic airport info

PS.THANK YOU AVALON

I loved SNA. Clean Clean Clean. Bathrooms where very nice. But I fly out of dirty Seattle (SEA).

Eh, Seattle's not that bad, compared to some airports, I think. I really like the big open area they opened up a few years ago with the restaurants and shops, with those huge windows floor to ceiling! Fun to watch the planes taking off. Also, we've picked up some really good food to carry along for the flight at Dish D'Lish.

Rae Rae, how was your trip?!!

I trip was great. Short ride lines!! Had a super time on the segway tour. I hope to have time to write a trip report soon.

so if you're flying into LGB and you gate check a stroller, then is the stoller waiting for you at the bottom of the stairs?! :confused3

Boy, not sure on that one! Guess I'd call the airlines or LGB to ask. :confused3

yep, i'll definitely call to find out. i'm really liking the $79 one-way fare from SEA to LGB on alaska...and i'm willing to lug 2 car seats with us for the cheaper airfare. now i just have to find a dependable shuttle service.

Thank you for all of the wonderful responses. But OMG!!!!:scared: The prices into all of these airports is astronomical right now!!! We had flights booked at a great rate, but they had to totally change our itinerary which really messed everything up, so I cancelled those. BIG mistake :sad2: , now everything is at least $100 more per person. For a family of 5, that sure adds up. We were going to by a seat for my almost two year old so we didn't have to wrestle her the whole way, but now we might just have to do the lap thing. It will be a VERY long flight.:scared1:

We're flying into Long Beach for the 1st time this December. We usually head into SNA, but the fares were considerably cheaper going into Long Beach. I'm glad to hear positive comments about that airport since this will be a new experience. :) We did book Super Shuttle.

we are flying into LGB on a Friday morning and are opting to take a taxi (which if it is true there is a flat rate, is cheaper than a shuttle) to Disney resort, but can anyone recommend a type of transportation from the DR back to LGB? I am hearing that the taxi back is considerably more expensive. Any recommendation or experiences would be GREATLY appreciated.

Interested to hear this answer, too. We are flying in to LGB and are taking a cab. WE had done this in the past to SNA and had the flat rate going back from DLH but we are staying at Desert Inn this time
