I am flying in a couple of weeks, and this will be my first time using a cane. I've purchased a nice foldable cane thinking that would be easier to deal with. But I have a few questions. What do I do with it at the security check? Will they have me set it aside (I can walk a bit without it) and go into the body scan? Will it need to go on the belt to be scanned?

I do have TSA precheck, so that should help a little bit. Any other tips you have would be very helpful! TIA!!

Your cane will go thru the detectors/ all with your purse, etc

They will give you an all wood cane to walk thru the normal section

If you chose not to give up your folded cane, I believe it is all get processing to do a physical search on you

I used a cane last trip and that is how it went for me

TSA will ask if you need a cane to walk through the metal detector. As mentioned, you will place your cane on the belt, along with your carry on and other belongings. You can keep your cane till right before you walk through the metal detector and pick it up after passing through; it’s only a few steps. While traveling, I recommend attaching a small label to the cane, which includes your name and contact phone.

TSA Pre is the best!

Listen to Gitelfor!

She answered you better than I did

It’s a very easy process to go thru for security

Great advice! Just remember not to touch the scanner when going through. My Mom sets it off every time because she reaches out for it for balance for some reason even though she can walk without a cane just fine. I always try to remind her now, but it seems she still does this every time. We have Pre Check too and it really does make it easier!

do not know if true for your Mom but I would have to touch side for balance while stopped if I had to stop as that is when my knee feels like it is going out if stopped even for very short time

Hmmm not sure, but don't think so. She can definitely stand a bit and walk without it. She hands it to me regularly when she is doing something or searching her purse.

I can walk short distances without but it is the standing where the cane helps me and I would be reaching for the side of scanner. I can do things around the house without cane but again I lean on something sometimes I do not even notice doing it. if looking in purse I would be sitting down or leaning. just me thinking out loud
