Airplane and Pressure on Ears

Our Disney trip has already come and gone (got back on 11/1). I had no problem take offs from NY and FL. However, I did have a small problem with my ears landing in FL but not as much trouble as I had landing back in NY. My right ear felt too much pressure that I was in tears on the flight back and it still hurts. I already have a doctor's appointment for Thursday, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and knows of anything I could take the next time I fly somewhere?

Someone told me to get these ear plugs called Ear Planes. Appartently you can find them in most drug stores. I am planning on getting them for my kids.

We all use them and find that it improves the ear situation tremendously!

I take sudafed for a few days before flying. I also use decongestant nasal spray before the flight, and sometimes during the flight.

I never have a problem on takeoff, it usually hits for me about an hour before we land, when the plane starts descending.

I have only tried earplanes one time, and they did not work for me. It was the worst flight ever for me. However I did have an ear infection that I was taking antibiotics for. So I guess I really can't blame the earplanes for that!!

I think the key is to make sure that your ears and head are nice and clear before flying.

I went to my doctor about a week prior to our vacation. I was suffering with my hay fever for two months and didn't want to be sneezing and have a runny/stuffed up nose while in Disney. I was put on a prescription nasal spray and Singulair, but I still had a problem with my right ear; something I have never experienced before. My appointment is for this Thursday, so I'll find out if I may have a sinus infection, ear infection or something else.

I do both suggestions - take Sudafed for a few days before flying, use prescription nasal spray for allergies and use Ear Planes! The Ear Planes can be bought in any drug store or Walmart, etc. They cost about $5 a pair and come in adult and children's sizes. I wear the children's size because I have tiny ear canals. I've worn the same pair for several trips and I don't worry about "stuffy" ears.
