I was wondering if any Canadian DVC members have upgraded an airmiles ticket to the discounted DVD annual pass. I would like to redeem my airmiles for 5 day children pass to upgrade to adult ap but I am not sure if this could be done and at what cost.

Any ideas?

I guess you are looking at a way to reduce the cost of your adult ticket.

From Cheshire's ticket sticky:

Disney does not penalize children for growing older. If you have a partially used child's ticket, and the child is now 10 or older, you may exchange the child's ticket for an adult ticket with the same remaining entitlements and no charge.

The child for which this is being done must be present at the ticket window when this is being done. The age difference must be reasonable! For example, if the child appears to still be a pre-teen, and the ticket is two or more years old they should be no problem. However, if the child appears to be 16 and the ticket is only a year old this will not be done.

The key points above, I believe, are "partially used" and "must be present". Therefore, what you are trying to do can not be done for an adult, but could be done for a child who the ticket was purchased for.

Disney has been really good at blocking ticket loop-holes.

I know that you can upgrade a childs ticket for an adult one. It does not have to be partially used at all. There was a period of time, last year I think, that the Disney Stores here in Ontario only had child tickets. You could buy one and then upgrade at the parks. No problem at all.

Sorry, I have no idea about upgrading to a DVC AP. I have a pretty strong feeling that you can do it though.

Thank you Dancing Disney Style. I thought I read about this being done before. I am trying to optimize my airmiles since it takes us forever to collect them.

I have used my AM to get park passes. I upgraded the number of days and also added the no expire option. It was very easy with no issues what so ever. I went to guest relations at DTD told them what I wanted and they did it.

Upgrading a child's ticket, to an adult ticket, can be done.

However, for no additional cost, it can only be done for a child who has now become an adult (Disney's definition of an adult, 9 and older). ie, you buy a ticket for a child who is under 9 years of age, and on a future trip the child is now 9 or older, you can upgrade it to an adult ticket for free.

If an adult tries to upgrade a child's ticket that was never intended for a child, you will likely have some trouble and be required to pay the difference between a child and an adult ticket.

Cheshire's sticky explains it quite clearly.

ETA: Note that if an adult could buy a child's ticket, and upgrade it for free to an adult ticket, everyone would be doing it to save on ticket costs. It's simply not permitted to be done (without paying the difference in price) for anyone else except a child who has now become an adult.

If the only intention is to save airmiles, you can upgrade the ticket at Disney. But, you will have to pay the cost difference from a child ticket to an adult ticket (plus other upgrades) if the ticket is intended for an adult.

No one said anything about not paying the difference. Sorry if that was not made crystal clear. The question was about upgrading tickets which requires paying for the more expensive ticket.

OP asked about upgrading a child ticket to an adult AP. Just pointing it out in case it was not understood by the OP.

I trust that's crystal clear?

In my original response I should have stated it could be done for an adult, if paying for the difference between the child and adult ticket. My bad! :)

FYI: I fully intended to pay to upgrade from a child ticket to an adult ticket. It never crossed my mind that this would be done for free. Not everyone in the world is trying to scam Disney. I was just trying to optimize my use of Airmiles and find the costs associated with upgrading tickets. Sorry if my orginal post was misunderstood.

No worries, and I agree.

It's always prudent to point out the complete implications. All too often there have been instances where a question is asked and answers have been misunderstood, which can lead to difficulties.

You will get full credit of the child ticket towards your upgrade.
