Anyone with good knowledge on airmiles?
I have enough for one flight to LA, and would have to buy another. Do you have to buy the other one when booking the free one? Is the price of the one you buy much more expensive than if you buy it somewhere like travelocity? Just starting to look into this. Thanks.

I have used airmiles for our last January Trip.

I ended up buying the other seat then and there so that we were together. And no there were no deals on the second flight! But the way I looked at it, it was better than buying two!b Seats are limited for airmiles.

BTW, Welcome to the Boards!

You don't necessarily have to buy the second ticket when booking through Airmiles. Last May when I booked my ticket to Orlando, they asked if I needed a second ticket on Air Canada ... but the price they were giving me wasn't cheap at all. I think it was $580. So I decided to wait and I booked it on my own. I think I ended up paying $460.

When you get your ticket through airmiles, do you still have to pay for the taxes etc.

I had enough Airmiles this year to fly the 3 of us to Orlando, but decided to buy the PHs Airmiles offered instead. I looked into it quite a bit and once the tax was figured in (approx $140/pp) it made more sense to get the PHs and look into Westjet for the flight. I have now pretty much decided on SWA for the flight (flying out of Buffalo) because so far nothing in Canada can come close to the price (it about half of the Westjet price). I'm not sure if they have PHs for Disneyland, but it may be more economical to consider this alternative.

I just re-read your post and realized you didn't say you were going to Disneyland. I just saw California and assumed!! lol

Sorry about that!

It is cheaper to buy the second ticket on your own or thru a TA. Air miles is not cheap if you have to buy a ticket at full price. You can arrange the seating later so that you are with your companions. We did this in 2002.

Taxes to fly from Winnipeg to LA are $120 and cancellation insurance is $70.

If you need to buy extra AM they are 50 cents each plus tax.

Check the dates you are traveling. The amount of AM you need to travel varies according to the time of year. If you go in Oct/Nov/early Dec or Jan/Feb (which are great times to go to WDW or DL) it is only 2800 AM to either LA or Orlando.

If you are a gold member check their gold members flight section. Had a flight to LA for 2300 AM and one to Miami for 1800 (I think it was) but you had to fly during certain dates.
