Airlines Must Pay Refunds

I just got off the phone with Delta....Back in December, they revised the scheduled departure/arrival of the second leg of my return flight (MSP to GRR) - departure was 1hr 42min later than original, arrival was 1hr 33min later than original.

I found in their contract of carriage Rule 19 that says, "...If there is a flight cancellation, diversion, delay of greater than 90 minutes, or that will cause a passenger to miss connections, Delta will (at passenger’s request) cancel the remaining ticket and refund the unused portion of the ticket and unused ancillary fees in the original form of payment."

I had to go back and forth with the agent for several minutes because she kept looking only at the first leg of each of my flights which only changed by a few minutes...finally got her to agree that this leg's schedule change was more than 90 minutes, so she agreed to a refund. She said it could take "3 to 21 days" to process.
Updated to add....my refund was posted to my credit card on 4/10, so only a few days from the conversation with Delta
 
Even if you have a basic economy flight booked, the airline's contract of carriage still applies. What qualifies for a refund varies by airline, but in general of the airline changes your flights so they depart and/or arrive more than a certain amount of time different from your original flight (amount of time varies by airline), adds stops to your itinerary, and/or changes your flights in such a way that you would miss a connection, you are due a refund.

Thank you for posting this! I just contacted Delta, I had not realized they had drastically changed my flight since I received no email but they added a new stop and it causes a missed connection. I just requested a refund from them. Now my return flight from United is the only one I'm waiting on. I hope they change it enough so that I qualify for a refund.
 
Received email on 4/9 from United that our flight to Vancouver booked for 4/26 was canceled. Phoned to request refund later on the 9th. Refund of roundtrip airfares and the premium seat fees for outbound flight posted to credit card yesterday and today. Still waiting for premium seat fees for the return flight. Perhaps tomorrow.

Thank you for this! I was just able to call and get my airfare to Rome for the summer refunded. Now it looks like our losses for the whole trip will be capped to $500, maybe less.

Very happy about this because I was sweating how to use that much credit domestically!
 
Just got an email from Air Canada, they cancelled our flight Vancouver to LA. Yes, the one to come home after our Hawaii cruise. Are Canada only offering 24 month credit, no fund.

Call them and insist on a full refund. Under US law a flight landing here MUST refund you for a cancelled flight. Our BA email made it seem like a credit was the only option and had a note that said call BA to discuss other rescheduling options. As soon as I said we require a refund for our canceled flights they immediately agreed. They are trying to make it look less obvious but they cannot Refuse a refund.

What about a flight starting in the US? Is that covered also?

We had a KLM flight canceled and had prepaid for specific seats. I've submitted for a refund of the seat puchases, but all I've gotten so far is a "case number" and "we'll be in touch when we decide what the refund should be".

I know the flight ticket and tax does for any flight taking off/landing at a US airport. I’m not sure if things like early bird boarding/seat assignment fees/or prepaid baggage are considered part of the ticket fee or a service, but I’d ask for a supervisor and request a full flight refund and see what they argue. It seems the international airlines are asking that you call their international numbers which is a pain with the time change.

Well, we didn't make the flight reservation, (directly) it was part of a package trip. We only paid (extra) for the specific seats we wanted. Seems to me if the reservation gets canceled, then they shouldn't keep the charge for seat assignments that aren't going to be used.
 
Has anyone been successful in getting a refund from Air Canada? Our flight was canceled and the only option was a credit - which we will most likely not use. They are not following the DOT rule. I have filed a complaint with the DOT.
