When people talk of airlines matching fares, are these matches that the "2nd" airline is advertising, or do people call the airline and see if it will match a competitor's price? Just wondering...

It usually means that another airline is advertising.
Airlines do not, as a rule, price match when you call in.

My mom is a TA and said to watch the prices often. When one is offering a promotion, the others are not far behind. I got airfare for 117 roundtrip to Orlando from Detroit.
