Has anybody had any luck putting in lowball offers on Priceline and getting them accepted?

Are there any good ways to find low prices other than checking each airline site separately. I'm finding places like Expedia have higher prices than I could get myself by just checking the airline directly.

Direct from the airlines is the best bet these days. You also have to be careful, some airlines charge extra fees if you book on third party sites. One (I forget which one) even charges for caryons if you booked on a third party site, but they don't if you book direct.

Just use Yapta afterwards to setup price alerts and watch to see if you qualify for a refund if the price drops.

Now there are other creative ways to get discounts, such as see if a local store sells gift cards at a discount for the airline that you wish to book for. If they allow you to purchase gift cards with a credit card, use one that gives rewards or cash back.

Check if the airline you are booking through is on any of the cashback sites and use them if they are.

I strongly recommend Jetblue if you can, they are usually competitively priced and have some of the best customer service in the industry.
