The last couple of times we checked in at the airport for our AA flight to FL we were offered an upgrade to 1st class for a fee. Does anyone know if seats are available does AA offer those kind of upgrades if you check in on-line or only at the airport? TIA!

If there is space available, such upgrades can be offered at the airport, too. Sometimes they'll even make announcement of upgrades for purchase in the gate area before boarding.

ETA - sorry, I misread your question. Not sure what AA does but I would guess they will offer upgrades online if they there are enough empty seats, just as other airlines do.

Not 100% sure about online with AA. I know that United offers it when you go online to check in, so I'm assuming AA is the same.

BUT, I do know that AA definitely offers day-of upgrades at the airport kiosks. You can go up to any of the AA check-in kiosks to print your boarding pass and it will always offer an upgrade if there's room in first. Depending on the flight, you can get a pretty good deal doing it that way.
