These are travel search engines, not travel agencies - so there's no service charge, you get linked directly to the service provider. Now, if the best fare happens to be on Orbitz for example, you DO pay their service charge.

I always use orbitz, expedia and travelocity to begin my searches and see what comes up. If there is something good on a certain airline I'll jump over to that airline's website to see if it displays the same deal. If it does, it will be $5 per person cheaper because there is no service charge that the others charge. Some airlines don't participate in search engines and it's necessary to go to the airlines website to find prices and availability. Examples include Southwest and Jetblue. If those airlines service the route I'm traveling, it's necessary to check those separately.

If you want to see displays as travel agents see them, you have to join www.expertflyer.com. Unlimited entries are $9.99/month while 200 or less entries (I think it's 200) is $4.99/month. With this website you input city pairs and a travel date and it will give you a list of all published fares along with the class codes for each fare. You can the input the same city pairs and check availability and see what flights or connections have that fare code available and the number of seats remaining at that fare. You can't book on there; if you find availability either go to the airline's website and try to get it to display or call the airline's toll free number. Also great for displaying free seats class codes for frequent flyer awards and upgrades on many airlines. Does not post web-only fares such as Southwest's ding or web-only fares. Displays all fare rules that help you try to fit the rules in order to find a better fare.

For a list of low fare European airlines flying intra-Europe routes, www.whichbudget.com displays such carriers and most of them are not in travel agent or web-based systems. Instead you are directed to the websites of the airlines flying the route you need where you can then check fares and availability on your travel dates.
