Airline experts: Please shed light on the best time to purchase tix

I am currently planning a trip from Hartford, CT to MCO 4/17-4/25. I am having great difficulty finding any reasonable fares. For current travel, the fares are about 163 and up, but travel must be complete by early April. I am having a hard time finding anything below 500/ticket for my dates. (As a matter of fact usair.com just quoted me 4000 for my family) We are a family of five and these prices will make the trip impossible. Also several flights already seem booked. Do they add more flights based on demand? Are these rates likely to come down? (If not, I'll just bag the whole thing beore I get too involved in planning) I am in a catch 22 as I'd like to book a villa, but that would not be refundable if I had to cancel due to airfare issues. But if Iwait to book the villa, I'm afraid it will be gone before I can get a decent rate on airfare. What should I do?

Some thoughts.

1)Have you tried JFK or LGA, further I know but it may be worth i t.

2)Sometimes its cheaper to fly to Tampa.

3)Song prices may (I repeat may, fall) only time will tell

I don't know what is going on with USAir for April 25. I am looking for April 21 to 25, PIT/MCO. I'm coming up with $367! They are usually less than $200. I pulled up the seating chart on americanexpress.com and almost all the seats are empty on the flights I want. If I put the return in for Monday, April 26, I get $190! It's the same deal with Delta. I can do AirTran if we leave early on Sunday for about $230. I'm holding out, I bet they will come down.
