I'm in Reno and we have the same issues. We don't have direct flights and they are expensive. We could drive to San Jose (5 hrs) or San Francisco (4.5) hours but adding in weather (in winter) considerations, travel time, parking costs and a hotel as most Eastward bound flights leave the West early it just isn't worth it.
I purchased our tickets for 12/25/06 and 1/9/07 in late February on Delta when they opened their 300 day or so window. Delta had just declared bankruptcy and the fares I got were $310 ea/rt. Since then, they have done nothing but go up. You can still find fares in the $400 range but they are not the ideal time frames I got.
When SWA came out with their fares in August, I could have saved $2.70 per person, stopped more, had longer layovers and arrived later. All in all it was a good purchase, but with airfare one never really knows.
Is there a way to find historical airfares for your area? I don't know, just curious. I think it is a crap-shoot as to when to buy and how to buy. I usually bypass the travel sites and just go directly to the airline website. Since your airlines are limited, it shouldn't be too hard to monitor them for awhile to see what the trends are.
