Okay, after looking into Allegiant, I'm now looking into Air Tran because the dates seem to work out a little better for us and I like the fact that it flies into MCO instead of Sanford. Right now, the departing flight is $55 and the returning flight is $106. I'm thinking about booking the departing flight only right now and holding out for a cheaper rate on the returning flight. Has anyone ever done this and been successful?

I do it everytime and never had a problem with it. Just never sure how long to wait before finally jumping on the fare, hate to get it and then the rated goes even lower. But, sometimes it can backfire a bit and go back up! Then I just try to be patient for it to go back down a little and then grab it. I've bought my flight down to orlando for Jan, but waiting for the return flight to go lower. Don't know if it will though, it's been at $99 now for the last month at least. The trip down was a bit higher then dropped to 99, and it said there were a few left at that price so I grabbed the two I needed before they went back up. It dropped again for a day or two, then went back up. And changed times by 3 hrs, but that's another story, lol. Anyway, you're lucky, $55 is a great rate! And I think it's a good idea to watch the rates as long as you keep a close eye on them, I do it everytime and it's worked out great so far. Good luck! :)

I always play the waiting game, too. It can be nerve wracking but it always pays off for me. I have waited as late as two weeks before we left. You have to consider the time of year you are going. Obviously, holidays are not the time to do this. And you have to consider that it may not pay off. There's the nerve wracking :headache:

Thanks for the replies! About the holidays, we will be flying down on November 17 or 18 and returning on the 21st. Do you think this is close enough to the holidays to have an effect on the rates?

With Airtran, you can book the fight now and get a credit to your Airtran account if the price decreases in the future. There is no charge from Airtran to do this. I will often book at a good price and hope for a better price. When I get the credit in my account I use it towards seat assignments on the current flight or towards a future booking of a flight.

I booked my Dec 18 flight home from MCO at $115 when it first became available and it has not dropped lower than that price yet. It HAS gone up though. I'm sure that's because it is so close to Christmas. But I plan to book my March trip at the current $105 and hope for a decrease later to $74 to $93, our normal "range" for MCO.

I wouldn't wait too much longer. I fly out of BWI on Airtran the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend and fly back the following Saturday.

I booked mine about 3-1/2 months ago at $89.00 going down and $59.00 coming back. Never once did it go any lower.

I am 12 weeks out and the fare has jumped to almost three times that and there are only 10 seats left on each flight!

I would book now. The price isn't going to drop so close to a major holiday and if you wait too long, no tickets may be available.

Thanks, everyone! Guess I had better be getting our dates nailed down and get this booked.:thumbsup2

Check the fare again on Tuesday/Wednesday and it may go down.

Fares posted are higher Friday through Monday because families are all home together and can plan better. I always book my flights very early (around 6:30 am when I get to work) on a Tuesday/Wednesday and they seem to be the lowest fares posted during the week.

If they don't go below $108.00 by then, I would go ahead and book it.

I am going to book a flight (one-way) on Airtran. I'd like to do my seat assignment now, as I don't want the kids to end up having to sit alone. If the price goes down later, can I use the credit for checking bags?

Yes - I just did that in June.

Well, shortly after my previous post, my $99 return flight for Jan 9th dropped to $94 for what turned out to be a few hours so I decided to grab it, especially with the knowledge that if it goes a chunk lower, I could try to get the credit. At least it was a little bit lower! It soon went up to 115 and even 136, right now it's back to 99. I have no idea why or what the changes back and forth mean, especially as it will say '4 seats left' at that price and then it'll go up and then back down to the previous price, doesn't make sense if there were only 4 left at one time. Confuses me, but I just keep watching for prices that go lower, lol! Hope you got a good price on your return trip!

I booked our flights a few weeks ago and checked Saturday and the rates had dropped down to $69 on both flights. So I called and they credited me the difference. I ended up with a $69 credit. I think it should have been more but I had used the $12 coupon and for some reason I think that messed things up.

Anyway, we are traveling again in March and will be able to use the credits then. I may use some now to reserve our seats. I had seats reserved when I booked with no fee. But apparently it was a glitch she said when I called back about the rate change because that row is reserved for minors traveling alone or something.

Are you flying out of Lexington? I don't have alot of experience with Airtran, but I will tell you I booked our flights in Feb (2nd day the fare was out) for October and they never once went down anymore only higher. I got $59 both ways which was the cheapest it got and now they are $269 and $282. I say book now and if it happens to go lower then you can get the credit.
