Air Tran service rating

Interesting that WE were among the 1.67 mishandled luggage rate they had last year:)
First time ever that an airline "lost" our luggage.
But we continue to fly Airtran and so far they have been pretty good given today's standards for "service".

Interesting.

I've always been pleased with Air Tran during the actual flight and on my travel day. The problem I have had is months before hand with the numerous flight schedule changes -- some of them significant. Minimal time changes don't bother me too much but cancelling flights or putting people from direct flight onto a flight with two stops isn't something that I can tolerate.

True. And I would agree that airport to airport, AirTran is one of the better airlines. Its nice having that XM radio onboard as well and they're ahead of the curve with Wi-fi.

But...

They are getting much worse with rearranging schedules, cutting down on direct flights (at least out of PHL), etc. They sometimes even change connecting cities or turn a nonstop into a connection. Their ground staff (at least at PHL) leaves much to be desired as well.

I've never understood the rap on AT here. I think I've had maybe one flight on a legacy carrier that WASN'T changed at least once, I've taken to checking my itinerary weekly because of that and I've always gotten the substitute flights I've wanted. As for misplaced luggage, USAir did this for one bag on the return flight one time, that's it. I have no brand loyalty, we'll probably use JetBlue in March 2011, this will be our second time with them.

The issue with AT on DIS is schedule changes. AT is pretty good about issuing refunds, or letting passengers change flights, even when the schedule change is minor.

I don't think complaints regarding schedule changes are included in these ratings.

I'm nervous about booking a flight on AirTran now. I've read negative things on the boards about them. We're wavering between SW and AT. I can get a tiny discount through work if I use AT. We'll be flying from Philly and I don't want them changing an early morning direct flight to something else. I've got 3 young children to contend with (their first flight) and I want it to be a non stop flight.

Your trip is in 16 days and you haven't booked airfare? SW almost never changes a scheduled flight. I don't know if AT is likely to change a flight that's only a few weeks in the future. I wouldn't wait to book.

Early morning non-stop flights to MCO from PHL don't seem to get cancelled/changed often. We fly either the 7am or 8am non-stop and have been doing so for at least 5 years, at least twice a year. Other than time changes of 5-10 minutes and a cancelled flight due to the airport closing in a snow storm (we were able to switch to a flight the day before with no problems) those early flights haven't been an issue for us.

Agreed. If that 16 days is the trip to which you're referring, you're really gambling waiting this long. No airline is going to make a schedule change that close. If you let it slip under two weeks, its gonna really get expensive.

We're booking today. My DH wasn't sure he wanted to fly with the kids, that's why we waited so long. I guess I should go ahead and book with AT. Even with the $15 per bag fee it's cheaper than SW because of my corporate discount.

At only 16 days out, you long missed any fare reductions that SW had.

I believe Air Tran also charges for seat assignments.
