Ok, I am 30 and have never been on an airplane, only been outside the airport to drop someone off. I'm afraid I'm going to be lost on where to go and what to do. For now, my question is...

I did not pay to book my seats with airtran..how do you get in the first boarding group? We want our family to be able to sit together, being we have children. If I check in online, 24 hours prior to my flight, will I be in the first boarding group? Or does this not affect my boarding group?

Thanks for any help!

Oh no! inexperience rears its ugly head! I didn't realize how often people got split up! Is it too late to pay for seat selection now that I have already booked??

I thought we just had a layover in Atlanta, but apparently, we have a connecting flight...meaning we have to switch planes? Does this mean we will have to go back through security...and re-pick seats? When I check in online at the 24 hour mark for my flight, will I also be able to pick the seats for this connecting flight>?? Sorry for what may be some stupid questions, but I've never flown before!

Hi jsgrand,

Maybe I can shed some light on your upcoming flight with Airtran. When you check in for your flight, either at the airport in person, or ahead of time (which is what we like to do) at home (less than 24 hours before the flight time) you will then pick your seats. The earlier you get online and check in the better chance you can get your seats together. In terms of boarding, Airtran boards by zones and this all depends on what seats you have.

For your connection in Atlanta, understand that Atlanta is a very large airport with many gates and terminals. (this is our home airport :-)). When you get off the first flight in Atlanta, at the end of the jet way (hallway that leads from the plane to the concourse, you can either ask the agent at the gate, or find the nearest monitors throughout the airport and search for your flight on the monitors. These monitors will inform you the time of the flight, if it is on time and what gate you will be at. Keep in mind in Atlanta, the two major airlines there are Delta and Airtran. Airtran uses majority Concourse C and D, but may be other areas of the airport as well like Concourse B. You are in luck if you get to remain in the same concourse, but should you have to change you must board the below ground tram (light rail) or walk (don't do this). To find out more information on the Atlanta Airport check out their website at www.atlanta-airport.com. After your first flight you will not have to re-enter security unless you go to the baggage claim terminal (which you would have no need to) at ATL. You will also pick your seats for that flight (second leg) at the time of check in.

Let me know if you have any questions! Good luck on your first flight. :thumbsup2

Make sure if you have to take the tram to a different Concourse make sure to hold on....that thing takes off fast!!!

As for choosing your seats now, log onto AirTran and under "My Account" click "My Bookings", then click "View" next to the flight you will be taking. This should list your itinerary. On the right side there should be "itinerary tools" and it should have something about choosing or changing seats. If you want to pay for your seats, then this would be where you could.

If you choose not to pick your seats now, then I would suggest logging in as close to the 24 hour mark as possible.

OP, you are also talking about the first boarding group. Keep in mind that you will have assigned seats on Airtran. You can get them now by logging in, as the PP posted, OR you can wait until check in where you can choose them then without fee. If you wait until check in, you may have choices of seats that are not together. If sitting together is important, buy the seats now.

Being in the first boarding group will only help you get overhead bin space.

Thanks for this thread! I am so used to general boarding, get a seat when you check in type deal.. never flown Air Trans before ..

As it is, on my flight next Thursday, DW and I will be together from BUF-ATL then separate from ATL-MCO. (I am in the row behind her)
The ATL to MCO leg is FULL there was only 8 seats to choose from!!
