Does anyone have any solid information on whether or not we can cancel flights (not yet) purchased with Air Miles and Aeroplan miles? If the border isn't open by the fall, and/or if vaccination and quarantine requirements make it impossible for us to go, will both give us a refund of miles and taxes? And if so, are there certain dates and requirements for these bookings (such as , have to be purchased by ...... Or for travel between ..... And ......)?

The airline would have to cancel the flight for you to have any hope of getting AM etc back. If you choose to cancel it depends on what type of ticket you purchased etc. Did you purchase insurance? Is the reason you are cancelling on the accepted reason list etc.

I haven't purchased them yet. We'd like to go in the fall, but if the kids will have to miss 2 more weeks of school isolating when we return, we won't be able to go. Additionally, if the numbers go up, with one child unvaccinated, possibly 2, we may need to pull the plug on the trip. Just wondering how easy it would be to undo everything, including flights purchased using airmiles and Aeroplan points.

I was wondering the same thing. The airlines have a no penalty policy until the end of June but I really do not trust Air Miles or Aeroplan to be as forgiving.

I would sort things out with the children and the isolating issues first before thinking about the flights. The airlines are jumping through hoops to get people to book. Better to maybe have to spend a few more $ on flights and book when you know things will be ok than jump the gun now.

It took me over a year to get my refund from Airmiles for flights I booked and Air Canada cancelled. I'm not booking anything new unless I Know I will be going.

Even if Air Canada has flights, if you book through Airmiles you are dealing with a different set of rules regarding refunds etc. I didn't realize this before but will keep it in mind when I book things in the future.

I booked directly and didn't use my AM because I didn't feel I'd be able to get them back if I had to cancel or change, I booked with Air Canada and know I can change or get a voucher if necessary.

Aeroplan bookings made through to the end of June can be cancelled. They keep extending the date monthly so it might change to July shortly.
