You can use Priceline for the nite before your flight. We have had great success in the MCI area. We have always been able to find a room for $30, sometimes as little as $20. Even if they don't have airport shuttles, it's a good deal. Long term parking at MCi is $5 a day, and we actually prefer that to motel shuttles.

The Ramada is older and I'm not sure when their last redecorating was done. However, there are lots of new hotels near the airport. Try www.choicehotels.com. The Hampton has been open since about 1986. I don't recommend the EconoLodge, but the Sleep Inn, or Courtyard are both good choices. The Parking Spot just opened a lot by the airport a few years ago. A LOT of people use it, and you can find their rates and 5% off coupon on their web site.

thats very helpful, I'll check that web site out

also welcome to the dis boards

You could try Thrifty Car Rental for long term parking. I believe it is a $1 cheaper than the long term lot at MCI and I feel it is a little more secure. The Thrifty shuttle will drop you off at your terminal. Just call before you go and they can let you know if they are full or not. I've done the long term at the airport and its not too bad either. Haven't tried the parking spot yet.

The Ramada is a little further south of the airport and looks like it needs to be rehab'd from the outside, but still right off I-29. I know there is a Holiday Inn, Embassy Suites, Marriott and several others closer. Look for hotels/motels off Tiffany Springs or 112th St. These are right off I-29 and less than 5 min. from the airport. Anything north of Barry Road/MO-152 will be less than 12 min from the airport.
