Ahh, the Disney Buffet....beware the ranch dressing.

OK, we just got back from a quick 3 nights stay. VWL studio on our points, paid for the regular dining plan. DDP must be added 48 hours prior - as always, payment must be made at the time you request it now. When you add it, you pay for it - not sure if people were backing out at check in or what, but just a side not.

Sunday - 7:25 dinner at Crystal Palace
The park was packed. Line was about 20 people deep to check in. Were seated around 7:45 ish. Had a window table right along side the check in line. We could see the fireworks though - which was nice.

It was also nice apparently for the little boy who crammed himself in between our table and our neighbors. Now I don't mind letting children watch parades or fireworks or whatnot in front of me, but this kid was on top of my seat. No one asked us if we cared that he stood there- intead we heard the dad ask him how the fireworks were when he went back to his table just across in the middle. Had the parents asked I probably woudn't have cared, but it really was annoying. I would never let my kids invade someone elses space.

Interestingly enough this was the same boy that I had seen head first under the sneeze guard picking through the cookies. His mom was right beside him, and just asked him to hurry up.

The buffet line itself didn't seem to have any flow to it Sunday night. People were just jumping in and reaching across randomly. As to the food - the prime rib was excellent and the rest was mostly okay in terms of quality. I went for the deserts on the other side of the island - pretty standard quality. Nothing was really good except the beef.

Hey - its a buffet, its Disney, its going to be chaotic to some extent. This was crazy. The table in the corner had 2 kids who decided to have a on the floor wrestling bubble gun match in between the times they were coming and going from the emergency exit doors right beside dh.

I have 2 young children - and they aren't exactly angels, but we stay at a constant state of threat to keep them in order and to keep them from bothering other people. Keep the chaos at our own table kind of thing.

The topper, though was dh's experience at the cold bar. The lady in front of him dropped her camera into the ranch dressing. Horrified she picked it out and desparately cleaned it off - her friends reassuring her that trhe dressing is "thick -it probably won't hurt it" and all move along. Never once telling any CM about the dressing. Look folks, my camera has been in pockets, the diaper bag - all kinds of places that don't need to trickle down to a buffet dressing. DH informed a CM and the dressing was changed.

Coupled with the drive-by - pat on the shoulder, audible smooch and picture pose with a wave good bye - have to say we're not loving the CP these days. Frankly our last few b'fast seatings were pretty lack luster.

Monday - lunch at CHH
We used to love it here, but portion size and quality have steadily declined. The tea has had a distincively sewerish smell essence for a while. We knew what to expect though. What we did not expect was the CM who was being so nice and friendly she decided to stay and talk to us during our entire meal. She was sweet, but bless her heart. My dd3 didn't want the attention, and it was awkward as we wanted to eat, but didn't want to be rude eating in front of someone. DS6 had to go to the bathroom mid meal - took him to the PP bathrooms, came back thinking surely we could finish up and leave - the CM was STILL there chatting away. We weren't being rude, but not encouraging the conversation by any means. Seriously took an hour to get out of there.

Monday - dinner at Roaring Forks
I had the flatbreak- mostly harmless, ds had a pizza - he liked it, dh had the roast beef sandwhich that he likes, but said its also shrunk in portion size since the last time he had it.

Tuesday - lunch at La Cantina
Extremely busy - lines at all registers on both sides. No tables open at the restaurant, but dh found one on the patio of the pavillion itself. Prices were outrageous, IMHO, but quality was decent. Portion size was acceptable, but not given the price. Of course we were using the dining plan or else I wouldn't have gone there. The food was good though - I preferred the chicken to the beef. The beef is shredded - the chicked seemed to have a better flavor. DH preferred the beef. Kids like the emanada. You get a TON of tortilla chips as a side.

Tuesday - 5:10 dinner at WCC
Now personally I really dislike WCC. I don't like the antics or the noise, the food has consistently been mediocre, but ds and dh wanted to go so I went. "Where's the ketchup" like 10 times while we were there. The giant fork, smart-alec server - the whole shabang. While I sat quietly in my own little personal hell, ds devoured his salmon. Would have thought kids would get trout like the adult menu, but it was salmon. He also helped to finish my strip that was undercooked and charred too heavily on the oustide. Had a burned taste. No I didn't send it back as I could not bare the thought of the server's response. DH had the skillet and did not ask for seconds of anything. DD picked at everyone elses - nothing struck her fancy besides the milkshake. My own little personal hell.

Wednesday - 11:00 late breakfast at Chef Mickey's
Ahh -Chef Mickey's....where the menu never changes and never gets any better. A dozen little birds buzzing around, chaos at navigating the buffet line, stale tater tots, atomic yellow cheese potatoes, see-thru thin bacon..if nothing else they are consistent. Our server was flat, but fairly attentive. We have had some really BAD service there on our last few trips. The waffles and little pancakes were good - Pluto's Cheese Blintz was good as always. The character interaction was better than at CP, but not particularly involved. They at least motioned for the kids to get out of their chairs for a hug.

I know I'm not a fan of the DDP and I am a firm believer that it is destroying the quality of WDW dining one restaurant at a time, but at some point there has to be a low enough point things start to improve. When we calculated the cost of 1 character meal that was ds's only request - added with the increases in price for cs meals it was basically $10 more to get the DDP with an additional 2 sit downs. I remember when Disney food was just expected to be crappy theme park fare - Pinocchio's burger special sauce...but for a brief and shiny period in the late 90's early '00's you could really count on some stellar dining experiences. Some still exist and there are many wonderful servers, but I really miss pre-DDP dining. Especially since there is no "free-dining" for DVC. I guess if I wasn't paying for it (although I'd never pay rack room rate) it wouldn't bother me so much. Alas, I will be so happy for our summer stay when we have a 1 bedroom and will have a kitchen. I plan on giving Disney as little of my dining dollars as possible!

Have to agree with a lot of what you said. I have started avoiding the buffets simply because of having the same kind of experiences you had. BUT...I will not wait in that line, from the very end, if I just want more vegetables...no way am I standing behind those guests poking through the rolls and salad. Same thing with the meat. If I'm looking for just beef, then I'm going to that station. That's pretty acceptable buffet etiquette. Not that shoving in front of someone is okay..it's not, but if there is an opening at the point you want to be, then go for it. Just don't stand there forever.

I have had kids jam in beside us at Coral Reef as well. We lucked out and got a tank-side table. We had a diver come down with a message to my dd and dh...so being tank side was terrific. But, when parents allow their kids to shove in behind you, to see the fish, it's really annoying. I had one young man, about 6, who kept banging into me, in his attempts to get his nose up against the glass. Then, he would turn and scream (in my ear)...'Hey Mom, look at this fish. Hey, there's a shark!!!' Man, it was pretty unpleasant. I finally had to ask the boy to move..he was really destroying my dinner.

And Crystal Palace??? Nope, not anymore. Same with Chef Mickey's. They are both on my 'must not do' list now. I haven't had a decent meal in either one in about 2 years. After watching what happens in those buffet lines more closely, I have been turned off them.

I'm not a huge lover of WCC either. But, I figure if I agree to go there, then I have to deal with the commotion. The vast majority of guests go there for that commotion. My issue??? I just don't care for the menu there. I have had wonderful CM interactions there lately. But the food was mediocre.
And yes, I agree with you...the dining plan has really brought about some less than wonderful dining changes.

I agree about stepping in politely for a second of something in a buffet line - that wasn't the case here- it was some cutting people off rudely, but more people starting at random places and going different directions.

I think I'm in the definite minority about WCC. Even people who don't really get into it probably aren't as annoyed by it as I am either. Its just one of those places that I find bone shatteringly unpleasant for the very reason that some people love it. Thus the reason we don't go there more than once every couple of years!

At a certain point its totally okay to want your space and your view - when you're paying outrageous prices for just those things, that is one of those times. I know parenting is a gambit of styles and accepted behaviors, I know cultural differences are real and valid, honestly in all our trips to Disney we saw moreof the outside "normal limits' of it. It really takes a lot to bother us - its Disney, its chaos, its kids, its excitement, some people will be rude - not going to ruin my day. One rude family after another was another thing - never seen anything quite like it. Honestly we set our bar fairly low in terms of expectations anymore.

Wow from your post you had a horrific time. I would vacation elsewhere from now on. Why pay for something you don't like. Nope not me. I would be taking hard earned vacations where I didn't feel this way, you deserve to have fun.

Actually we had a really nice time. That post was pretty dining specific - which is why I don't plan on spending any more money than I have to on Disney dining outside of a few standards ('Ohana, Artist Point, Sanaa).

We are DVC and love it. What we don't like is the DDP. Being a quick trip and in a studio its just not as easy to eat in the room or waste time off property. The way Disney has priced things to pay OOP - the dining plan made more sense - which is what they want.

It's funny but this is exactly how a lot of DVC people think...the same as the OP. We have seen dining options go downhill over the years. Most of us don't eat at the usual WDW spots the general public eat at...we just don't think we are getting what we are paying for.

We love WDW...that's why we buy into DVC. But, we also realize that not everything is going to be perfect all the time....especially the food. But lack of quality in food options is not marring my enjoyment of WDW either. It is what it is.

Glad to hear you at least had some fun.

Goofy4tink, I hear you but man I just cannot imagine buying into a timeshare and then not liking this much of your experience. (dining and eating are a major part of our vacations)
Of course it probably wasn't that way when you did, but what a let down.

Fortunately I love the food at WDW, but I didn't know it "when". But I can usually find something anywhere that I like as long as it isn't seafood. LOL

Oh boy that sounds more than a bit frustrating!!! I would never be able to put up with people crawling around me to see fish or another attraction while I ate. (And can't people just go to the ginormous tanks in The Living Seas if they want to press against the glass?)

And the ranch dressing. Ew. Ew. Ew. :scared1:

I have to agree with the assessment of those buffets..I disliked the same ones, that said a big part of our trips is dining, and the dining plan makes more financial sense for us.So we will continue to do it .I don't put up with kids climbing all over me and invading our my space, my own child is not allowed to disrupt other diners, and I will not accept it from anyone elses

OP your post is exactly why we never do the ddp. We can never get it for free because we can only vacation in July. Next, my 2 kids are disney "adults" so for my family of four it would be about $200 per day including tips. Last summer we went for 10 nights so I made a food envelope with $200 for each day. We ate very well and whatever the kids wanted. Granted, we did mostly cs at Disney and ts offsite but we had dessert and snacks everyday. Breakfast was mostly in our room from the grocery store.
There are some fantastic restaurants offsite close to DTD where a meal including drinks, dessert, alcohol and tip never cost more than $60-$70 and the food was fresh and delicious. Compare that to Disney's way overpriced TS restaurants. We never, ever spent the entire $200 per day. I also have to say we were not very impressed with most of the cs at Disney (some small portions, some cold food). Believe it or not, the exception was the POP food court which we mostly found to be good and it seemed fresh. At the end of the trip I had about $600 food money left over so it seems that ddp will not be included in our future visits.

People, please....what MelissathePooh has done is authored one of the most engagingly eloquent descriptions of the specific damage the DDP has wrought - from the person on the street, seat at the table, "point of sale" perspective.

There is no way apologists for Disney's dining strategy can deny their increasingly losing battle, when faced with things like that brilliant "where the menu never changes and never gets any better" encapsulation of the buffet mill known as Chef Mickey's.

we stay at a constant state of threat to keep them in order and to keep them from bothering other people.

Loved that. :)

They have salmon for the kids and trout for adults? Now I know those fish are related in some way, but from my memory trout tastes a lot lighter and more pleasant than (nasty skanky stinky) salmon. Not that I dislike salmon or anything and would have run screaming as a child if forced to eat it... :3dglasses

Goofy4tink, I hear you but man I just cannot imagine buying into a timeshare and then not liking this much of your experience. (dining and eating are a major part of our vacations)

FWIW, my mom and stepdad belonged to RCI, had their honeymoon at an RCI resort in the bahamas, and ate sad wilted salads the entire week because there was NOTHING else that was vegetarian. They expected a small variety, but not nothing! But they didn't sell the timeshare just b/c of that (there were plenty of other reasons). Dining is just dining.

From what I was reading, the most unpleasant parts were caused by other people, though. Those people might be anywhere!

I would consider WCC a bit of hades as well, personally. But, like the OP, I think I'm in the minority there. My husband would LOVE it.

Really well written post. I have to agree with the basic thought that food seems to be going downhill with no change in sight. Alot of CS spots we just plain avoid now. And it's hard for me to find a good burger for my son. One that isn't fatty/rubber and just tasteless. I don't understand the argument of, If you don't like the food then just vacation elsewhere. Because, it's the love of Disney that makes us care about the food. We want it to be better, because we love going there. And don't even get me started on their weird bread buns... :headache:

Thanks CandyMandy:goodvibes

Our son loves fish - just about any kind and would love to have had trout instead of salmon. He's also a sashimi nut. At Artist Point - even when its Copper River season the children are served Copper River. Sanaa also served the same fish as on the adult menu.

Sometimes the DDP can be fun - trying to get the biggest bang for the cost. And depending on the type of dining experience you plan it can be more cost effective. Overall, though given the declines (which are subjective) I'd rather pay out of pocket for the handful of places I really like and eat in our villa otherwise (particularly for long stays). I'm pretty sure I can get an entree at Artist Point for less than $90 a day!

I'm interested to see what happens with Le Cellier now that it will be 2 credits for dinner.

Yuck. I wonder what else gets dropped into the dressings?? Oh nevermind I don't want to know.:rotfl: I think my one of my resolutions this year will be to stay away from all buffets! Very disappointed in a lot of the buffets at Disney but do like WCC. It is fun and I thought the food was good.

After reading your dining report it makes me even more happy that DH and I are "quick counter service" type people. :) We have only eaten two sit-down meals at Disney (Akershush and 50's Prime Time Cafe) and this was 10 years ago. We really prefer just grabbing something quick, so we can get on with our day of enjoying the rides and attractions.

I used to be a waitress and the restaurant where I worked had a full menu, and a daily buffet. There were many times we had to replace an item on the buffet because of a customer. I remember one in particular, we had this bowl of Graham Cracker Fluff on the salad bar (it's a dessert type pudding) and I saw a young boy about 5 or 6 years old actually LICK the serving spoon and then put it BACK into the pudding!! I went over and grabbed the bowl and changed it out. I never understood parents who just let their kids go up to the buffet by themselves, and not supervise them. I'm sure there were things that we waitresses didn't see to be able to correct too. :(

DH did correct me on something...Chef Mickey's has changed the menu. They discontinued Goofy's PB&J Pizza that he loved. I think he's about to post - should be interesting to see his take in words!

I was just about to post..."Goofy called, he wants his pbj pizza back."

Seriously, the last two times I've been to chef mickey's I've counted at least half a dozen birds flying around. I know it is the grand canyon concourse and everything, but that's nuts.

ITA with this dining review. We don't eat at most Disney restaurants if we can help it and never eat at buffets, anywhere. The thought of dozens of people potentially touching/coughing/sneezing on my food grosses me out.
One place we do like is Olivia's at OKW.
Good food, good service and rarely crowded. The key lime pie is our favorite!

You are funny! Never changes and never gets any better-how true! That's why Universal gets our money nowadays.
