AHH, AC issues

Well, I thought I was being proactive s since our AC unit is 7 years old, I thought it woudl be a good idea to take advantage of one of those ads for AC service. DH changes the filter every month but no other maintence. The guy came out today and would not even do the $79 ceck up and cleaning. Said our coil is too dirty and the amount of dirt is more thn what is covered in the specal. Surprise surprise. He indicated it needed to be pulled out and washed with acid? Then he brought in the proce book and it woudl be just under $600. YIKES, with DD and I both not working, that is not possible. The AC works fine today but now he has me scared that it may stop working soon. Does anyone know if DH can pull the coil and clean it himself?

I would get a second opinion from someone reputable, like your gas or electric company. Sounds like a total sales rip off to me.

Yeah, I'd be suspicious too.This sounds like a classic "bait & switch." Your A/C unit ought to last a lot longer than that. We had to replace ours last summer when it finally gave up the ghost. It was at least 20 years old and we had been nursing it alone for about 3 years. We never had to "dip it in acid" and only had to replace the furnace burner once in all those years. Get a second opinion from someone who is NOT running a "special".

I just had a new a/c unit put in my house last fall. My a/c guy said to come out once a month and hose down the a/c unit - you can see the fins on all four sides where the grass and dirt collects. He told me that if I do it on a regular basis that my a/c will be more efficient for a longer time. You might try that and see if it helps. If its really dirty do it several days in a row to let the dirt settle and rerinse.
