Aggressive Cat Behavior

:hug::hug::hug:

That had to be the hardest decision you ever made. I am so sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry. What an awful situation, and a very sad ending.
I would be worried about rabies. I'd think erring on the side of caution might be a good idea since rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms appear.

I would never visit that vet again. Cats can be sedated, there was no reason to put that poor cat to sleep before it was examined.
That was really an unnecessary comment. Don't you think she already feels bad enough?

OP-I'm sorry you had to do that, I don't know what I would do if I had to deal with a situation like that.

Yikes! My guy is being a little agressive on me (he bites at times, you should see my shoulder), but I wouldn't put him down or give him up (although i would consider giving him to my dad, lol).

to the OP, if Cedric (see left) was able, he'd give you "hugs" - I pick him up, he puts his arms around my neck and licks away. So sorry for your loss and I hope things get better.

I made the final decision for Callie; not my vet. She was absolutely out of control and was a danger to people and other pets. It was something that was on my mind most of the night and I feel I made the right decision for myself and my other cats.

Although she had had her rabies vaccination, the other cats have been quarantined as a precaution. I honestly don't know if any of them were bitten, but there was enough blood and scratches for exposure to be an issue. After a visit from the health department and the local police, we've decided that since I wasn't bitten I should be okay.

I honestly wish people who disagree with my decision could have gone through what I did last night. This wasn't a little aggression; she was a wild animal completely out of control. I have never seen ANY animal act like that outside of a horror movie.

Once again, thanks for the support.

So sorry you had to go through this - it must have been a difficult decision.

OP, I'm very sorry for your loss.

I am shocked that the vet didn't first sedate her so he could examine her, since pain or illness can often cause that sort of behavior, and many of the causes might have been treatable. If he couldn't find the cause, or if it was something he couldn't treat, he still could have euthanized her at that time. I've never heard of a vet jumping straight to euthanasia like that. The vets we go to and the ones I worked with would not have done that.

I hope that the cause for the change in her behavior will be apparent in her necropsy and that your other cats will be okay.

I'm so sorry. I don't doubt that the situation was extreme and that you had justifiable cause to put your cat down. I know some people will react harshly. The problem is, we as humans can't always understand/believe what we don't experience ourselves, especially if it is out of the ordinary. Sometimes you just have to give people the benefit of the doubt and I'm sorry if people find it difficult to do that for you. I can tell you are cat lover (otherwise you wouldn't have four cats) and that tells me that you are experienced with cats and cat behavior. You must have seen something that really frightened you. I

I am so sorry for your loss and what I know was an extremely difficult decision. Only you know your pets. Obviously there was something wrong with her, for her to just start attacking without provocation.

I have cats, too. :grouphug: I'm so sorry. If you could, please let us know the autopsey results.

Awww--haven't gotten past the first page and I am sorry that you had to put her down.

I have had cats for decades and have never experienced anything like it. I've never owned a feral cat and her behavior reminded me of those I have heard about--however, I've never heard of a cat becoming feral.:confused3

But be assured--if the vets thought they were endangered as they were unable to examine her due to her behavior...there probably wasn't much that could be done.

I'm sorry that you had to lose the kitty.

I am so sorry for your los. How long until you will be able to find out the autopsy report and the others can come out of quarantine?

 teacherforhi. Nobody can imagine what you went through. As a cat lover, the whole situation is heartbreaking.

Rest assured, you know that you did the right thing, I have no doubt.

And now Callie is no longer upset, but happy and playing with all beloved kitties, waiting for us to come to them.

Oh no, that's so heartbreaking. I'm so sorry you had to make that decision. (((HUGS)))

I'm so sorry. I know you did your best for all. What a heartbreaking experience for you to have to deal with. Condolences.

teacherforhi, I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved Callie  I am sure it was a difficult and horrible decision to have to make  Please know that Callie could not have been very happy with whatever was happening to her too and that was no quality of life for her either. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am sorry for your loss. It was a difficult decision to make but I am sure you made the right decision for you and your other cats. I hope you get answers soon. Your cat was in distress for sure most likely just sedating would not have worked since she was so worked up.

Put an animal down is a deeply personal decision that I am sure no takes lightly.

Since there's a fear of rabies (however unlikely), there was a "rush" put on the necropsy. I should have some preliminary results by Wednesday so that the others can come out of quarantine. Of course, they're all acting strangely anyway, since they were traumatized by Callie's behavior and now have to spend time in cages in a strange place. I went to see them this morning and they just seem so sad and scared and I'm not allowed to take them out of the cages to comfort them, which Euri really wanted. I hope we get some answers soon.
