Age of first-time grandparents

Haha!!! My parents are 61 and 62 respectively, and I'm only thinking of TTC next year. My grandma is gonna be 91 in a few months, and if she survives, mine would be her first and only great-grandchildren.

We wait a long time in my family.

My mom was 53 when her first grandchild was born (my DS).

No wonder DH and I both experienced having someone to call our youngest child our grandson.

I'm very thankful to not be a grandma. Neither of my older sons are ready to be fathers and the youngest is 16! I want them to be financially ready and married. Maybe it's b/c I still have a child at home, but I don't even have grand child yearnings yet.

My parents were 50, but my mom was certainly ready. :rolleyes1 I worked with a lady who was a grandma when she was 28. She had her first at 14 and both her daughters had their first by 14. She had 6 grandkids by the time she was in her mid-thirties.

I am 52 and not expecting grand kids for at least 10 years.

I was 38 when my daughters were born.

I´m 32 and I certainly hope I will be a grandma within the next 10 years.

I was going to guess 52.

I am 37 and am pregnant with my third child.

According to census info the average age is 47. I was 35 and had my last chid at 37. There is a 19 year difference in age between my oldest and youngest kids.

OMG, that is at least 15 years younger than I would have guessed. Grandparents to me are gray haired, retired people on social security, not someone 8 years too young to qualify for a senior discount at Denny's.

My mom was 64 when our first was born. My MIL was 52.
DW and I are 53, and doing, the math, it is at this point impossible for us to become Grandparents before age 54, and given our kids school and career plans, I suspect we'll be in our 60's when (and if) a first grandchild arrives.

I don't know, but I know I was shocked when I first joined facebook and saw many of my highschool classmates were already grandparents. I can't imagine being a grandmother! I'm 43.

I was 46 and DH was 56 when our first grandchild was born. My sister was 35 when she became a grandma.

Oh I totally agree!! I was amazed when I was 39 and joined facebook and how many of my classmates had grandchildren. Gosh, my best friend in high school had just gotten pregnant with her first child while our other best friend came over with her grandson who was going to go to kindergarten soon...WOW!!!

My DH just turned 48, and our kids are teens.

I can't imagine him being a grandpa. I do giggle sometimes, he'll say this movie TV star is pretty (in her 20's) and I have said, you know you're old enough to be her grandpa...

In my area where I teach the average age for grandmothers is young. Some of my PARENTS are 26-29. (I teach 7th/8th grade). When I was in a 3rd grade classroom we did a household survey of who can be president (US citizen, 35 or older) The kids did the survey and some of the GRANDPARENTS were under 35. I had a 33 year old grandmother in the class.

:scared1:

I'm 33 and I can not imagine having a grandchild. That's some crazy stuff!
I'm shocked so many of my husbands old HS friends are grandparents now. I can not imagine being a grandparent at 46 either.

I worked with a woman who became a grandmother at 32. She had her daughter at 16, who in turn had a baby at 16.

I'm 41 and have NO desire to have grandchildren anytime soon, even though I have a 21 and 19 year old. I want them to do things a lot differently than I did!

Apart from the fact that I am live in the Uk and am British I fit right in. I was 47 when my first Grandchild was born.

Some of you people had crazy young answers....35-37-40?? Really, you think would be the national AVERAGE age of a 1st time grandparent?

47 seemed really young, but for the average age to be something like 37....

That would mean a whole lot of people would have had a kid when they were 19-20 and then their kid went out and popped out the grandchild when they were 16-18 years old. Sure, both of those things do happen....but not nearly often enough to be average across the country.

My guess, would have been more in 50-52 range....so a bit higher than it is actually is.
