Age for Space Mountain?

My DD has been watching videos on YouTube of Space Mountain and she really wants to ride. She’s 5, 44” and 46 pounds. It’s my favorite ride so of course I want to take her, but is she too small? Her 3 year old brother is 40” and 42 pounds but I think he’s too small...

What does everyone think?

Mine rode it as soon as she was tall enough! She loves thrills and she loves it!

Someone actually gifted us their FPs for it (this was a couple of months before FPs went digital), so we took it as a sign (I’d been thinking of waiting and not doing all the 40” rides at once, but hey, who can give up ok bonus FPs?!)

ETA: I’m sure Disney’s height requirements are very conservative for liability reasons, so I certainly wouldn’t worry that they’re physically too small? If you think they may be overwhelmed/scared that’s another issue.

Weight and age don’t matter, all they do is check height which I think is 40 inches. Then it’s up to whether the kid wants to ride! If they are both good with Thunder Mountain then I’d say Space is the next step up.

Depends on the child. If she loves thrill rides ....go for it!
DGD rode at 4 and she was fine. Loved it and all thrill rides

My hesitation is my mother (who will be with us on the trip, and also loves rides so she’s not scared herself) keeps telling me they’ll “fall out”. Ummm I don’t think that’s a thing if they meet the restrictions, right?

Both of your kids are tall enough! If you think they are able to follow directions, and emotionally handle the ride, then go for it!

They won't fall out. The height requirements are conservative and they are strictly adhered to - I have seen many a child turned away from the ride as they were not tall enough. The height is also use to determine their development if the ride has to have an emergency stop triggered.

What other rides have they gone on which they loved and would be similar? There is no upside down parts to Space as you know if it's your favorite ride.

The lap bars on Space Mountain are individual and cinch down pretty low. My tiny 4.5 year old daughter (just over 40 inches) rode and I felt very safe. As long as she isn't scared of dark ride or fast rides this just combines the two.

My granddaughter was 2.5 yo when she started riding Space Mountain. She loves it. My grandson is 3 and also rides with his dad. He prefers to only ride with daddy.

It depends on how brave she is. Has she been on BTMRR? It's basically a similar ride, but slightly less scary since you can see everything. My oldest didn't enjoy Space Mountain until he was 7. My younger boy is ready at 5. His twin sister is also big enough, but is terrified of it.

Ok we will take them on BTMRR first and see how it goes. They’re both pretty fearless but the little guy will be afraid of the dark so he’s probably a no.

my kids are giants, and they've all hit 40" before they turned 3 and rode it. other than the dark part, SM is relatively tame compared to the other height restricted rides...no big drops or anything. it just depends on your kid. this last time we took our 2 year old on everything, including GOTG, which he asked to go on again and again. you never know!

Will you have another adult with you? If not I think you have to skip it. Even if Disneyland would allow one of them to ride "alone" (meaning no adult sitting next to them) I would not be comfortable with it.

4 adults and 2 kids, so we’re good there.

It’s my five year old daughters favorite ride! By her third ride she’d figured out the photo op and was comfortable enough to pretend she was picking her nose. She was secure in her seat, no problems. 43” tall, 43 lbs.

Um. Since big thunder has a shared lap bar, unless the adult riding with her is very small, that’s going to be far more nerve wracking than space.

Falling out is still not a thing, but it can FEEL like it’s a thing on BT. And I literally flat out didn’t believe people that kids start to kind of slide downish during the ride so it seems like they’ll come out (none have. but it seems like they will when this happens. but they won’t.) until it happened with my son and his dad who is a bigger guy. His dad felt traumatized and flat out refused to ride that coaster with him ever again after that.


I’d go straight to Space, since it’s not a shared lap bar.

I have kids that have no fear of SM, BTMRR, TOT etc. but are TERRIFIED of the Winnie the Pooh ride.

My son first rode SM at 3 and loved it. Same trip, he freaked out in MuppetVision - so much so that we had to leave. You never can tell!!!
