AG Bitty Twins or standard doll?

I have a 5 year old DD who has been talking about an American Girl doll for over 6 months. Well, the AG christmas catalog came last week and she's flipped through this for hours so far...she keeps pointing out the Bitty Twins and the My American Girl doll that looks most like her. I want to get her one for Christmas with the free shipping before that expires, but she won't pinpoint a favorite (of course, because that would make it too easy.)

So...does your DD have one or the other that she loves? Or one that you think might be a better option? I'm just looking for things that might steer me in one direction or another. Any advise or insight would be great!

I've got two older boys, so this little girl stuff is a new adventure for me! Help!

My DD is 10 and she loves them all!!! It's hard for her to choose.She liked it when she was little to dress like her doll but now that she is older she likes the historical dolls and the girl of the year dolls. If I had to choose between the 2 I'd pick the My American Girl doll that looks like her. IMHO the Bitty Twins are just another baby doll with a higher price tag. When I think of AG I think of the my american girl and the historical dolls. JMO

If you got the one that looked like her it'd be cute to get them matching outfits. You can find some on ebay or esty.

I'm sure whichever one you get her she will love it.

Totally agree with the previous poster. I never even considered a Bitty Baby for DD. Plenty of baby dolls out there.

But, I also did not get my DD when she was 5. To me, that was just too much money for a young child who wasn't old enough to take care of the doll. She got her first AG at 6 and it was with the understanding if she didn't take care of it (like, it couldn't go outside or get colored on) it would be put up until she was older. I think the knock-offs from Target or elsewhere are a good tester to see if a child is ready to care for an American Girl.

My DD is turning 6 this month and has a bitty and Kit doll (no twins). When all her friends get together to play, they only play with the older AG dolls. She will play with bitty alone, but no way will she take her out when with the other kids because they are a little older. Only when one girl comes over (5 next month) will she play bitty.

When my DD was 5, ALL SHE DID was play with her Bitty Baby. Her best friend would come over with her Bitty Baby & that is all they would play with. That went on for a few years. Definitely her best/most favorite toy ever.

She & her BFF must have had 8 AG dolls between them, but they played with their Bittys 90% of the time.

My DD is 6 and Bitty Baby has been her constant companion since she was 3. However, she NEVER played with her Bitty twins. I'd either just buy your daughter one bitty baby with a few changes of clothes or the AG Just Like me she wants. My daughter also has Felicity and Elizabeth and plays with both of them too!

If I was starting with AG at 5, I would lean towards the AG Just Like Me before Bitty because when she is invited to a friends home, it is her standard dolls she carries.

I have a 5 year old dd who will be 6 this week, and she still plays with her Bitty Baby and Bitty Twins a TON! She got the Bitty Baby when she was 3 (mainly because her sisters were getting the Historical dolls and I added it onto that order since I was at a loss about what to buy her!) and she played with her quite a bit. Then when she was 4 she asked for the Bitty Twins, which she enjoyed much more because they have hair she can brush! She has a boy/girl combination and she and her friends play with them ALL the time. It was probably the best toy investment I ever made. Plus their hair still looks like new (unlike most of the other baby dolls we've had after a few months) and there are so many cute outfits and accessories she can use with them. I would say if your dd is mainly going to be playing with the dolls by herself, that the Bitty Twins will be more fun for her at that age than a single doll. Now, if many of her friends have the Just Like You dolls or Historical dolls, that would be different as she would want to play along with them.

My dd is getting her first larger doll this year for Christmas. I was going to hold off another year since she does still play with the Twins all the time, but she is in love with Kanani this year, so I guess I will go ahead with her! But generally I would say the girls still play with the Twin dolls up to age 7 or so. Also they hold their value much better than most other toys, so you can always ebay them in a couple years and put the money toward another doll. Or they make wonderful keepsakes for future grandchildren as they hold up really well.

My DD never wanted a regular American Girl Doll, but she had a bitty baby (and later, when she was 6 and baby brother was born) and a set of boy/girl twins. She played with the twins and bitty baby doll forever and ever. I think it is one of the things she played with more than any other of her toys and the only dolls she ever wanted to play with.

My DD is 6 and loves her Bitty Baby and Bitty Twins. She's had her Bitty Baby for a couple of years, and the Twins she got last Christmas and she plays with them ALL the time. She takes turns on which one goes with her when we leave the house. I'm trying to decide if I should get her an AG doll this year for Christmas (she'll be 7 next April).

DD 8 has quite a few 18" AG dolls Kit being the 1st for C-mas when she was 5 & a 1/2, *Kanani's in her Christmas stash I'm building and need to stop building - it's quite full.... She discovered the ebay Bitty Twins I had stowed away earlier this year *they look very much like she and her brother did as toddlers - she loves them, calls them Lilly and Carter *her name and her brother's name

Did you know you could order just one Bitty Twin?? You'd do so by calling a store not the catalog/online # - or you could purchase the set and sell one on ebay or some other place - or just give her both

My dd 5 has the baby the twins and a big doll out of all of them she plays with the baby and th twins. She liked having the big doll mostly because her big sister has them. I would go with the twins but mostly go with whatever your daughter really wants.

My daughter loves her bitty baby twins. We purchased them for her for Christmas a few years back and she still plays with them now (she is 10).

We have a single twin. I wanted my 3 year old to have hair to style other than mine! I bought a set of twins and then sold one of the dolls. She doesn't know it ever had another doll with it. If you post on craigslist, you might be able to find someone who would like to split a set of twins.

Otherwise I would go for the Just Like You.

DD(5) has the Bitty Baby, Bitty Twins, and the full sized AG dolls. At age 2, she got the Bitty Baby and a full sized doll that is like, but not, AG. At age 3, she got the Bitty Twins and a full sized AG doll. The Bitty Baby and Bitty Twins have never gotten much playtime at our house. It is all about the 18 inch dolls with and always has been. Actually, the doll that gets the most playtime at our house is the Cinderella Princess and Me doll from Toys R Us. She pretty much goes everywhere DD goes and has since Santa brought her last year (before she arrived it was the AG doll that went everywhere), and Cinderella regularly borrows the AG dolls' clothes (a little big on her, but they work),

My DD got her first bitty baby at 18 months. She got bitty twins (to share with her little brother) at 3 1/2 and got another bitty baby last Christmas at 4 1/2. She takes them everywhere--they travel with us, camp with us, go to church, everywhere. She has the african-american bitty twins and they look just like her and DS. When we took the girl bitty twin to the AG store to get her hair done, a girl working there walked up to DD and said "That must be your bitty twin getting her hair done. She looks just like you."

DD is hoping Santa will bring her a "big doll" this Christmas. We got one at Jo Ann's this summer for DD to practice with. With a coupon, she was only about $15 bucks. She is not good quality, but Santa didn't want to bring an AG doll to DD until Santa knew she could take care of her. Even with this "big doll," DD still takes her bitties with us everywhere. The other doll barely travels with us.

DD also gets to play with my Samantha once in awhile. Even then, bitties travel with us, Samantha doesn't (by DD's choice). She LOVES her babies and except for school (where they are not allowed to bring toys), she has one with her all the time. Usually more than one. That's what double strollers are for.

I love buying toys that I know my kids will eventually out grow; knowing that I will never be able to get that thing again makes me "enjoy" that particular age. I indulged my ds's Thomas stage (now, he is 11 and his trains are boxed and put away until some other child can enjoy them), Hot Wheels, dd;s stuffed animals (I actually wonder if my dd will ever outgrow these...) and, now, Pokemon and American Girl.

My dd hated dolls until she turned 8 and suddenly decided she wanted a $100 AG doll. I was hesitant to buy it, but here we are, 3 dolls later and 1 on deck. I indulged her wants *at that time* because, like I said, I love buying toys for their particular age (knowing in 2 years I won't be able to). She is 9, still asking for AG dolls and I keep thinking we only have another year of this, but I will buy them as long as she lets me.

I started this morning thinking I was "definitely" going with the full size doll after reading some of the first replies....then I read more comments and now I'm thinking the bitty twins...maybe?

I agree with the PP who mentioned buying things that you know they'll outgrow...I do that too, and you're right, she won't want the Bitty Twins in a year or two.

Such a tough call!

Do the Bitty Twins have lots of clothing/accessory options or are they pretty limited?
