After pains with second child (birth)

I just had my second baby 8 months ago, I don't remember the after pains being too bad. I took motrin and tylenol and that really helped. They were definitely worse during/shortly after nursing.

Mine were worse--but the docs and nurses know about this..so if you express your concern ahead of time--they will give you a pain med about the time they give you the stool softener pill.

I didn't know about it--so had some ouch cramps for a while.

Don't recall why it is "worse" with subsequent births---but just that it is. Different pain threshholds for different women though. Depends on what else might be hurting at the time.

Mine were more uncomfortable with my 3rd especially while nursing but not unbearable. :flower:

I once asked my grandmother about this because she had 12 children. :earseek: She was a very petite but strong woman. She said she didn't remember any pains but it was probably because she was too busy cooking and chasing after children!

Good Luck,

Lori

I seem to recall being told that the pains get worse because the uterus has to work harder to return to it's 'pre-baby' shape.

The thing that hurt the most was the ob yanking out the placenta. OUCH!!! That hurt worse than any other part of childbirth. However, the afterpains felt like mild menstrual cramps and nothing more.

With my 4th, she was laying on my spine so the eipidural really didn't do anything (but you could of chopped off my left leg and I wouldn't of felt a thing ;) ). Immediately after she was born, I just all the medication that couldn't 'flow free' started to work. I felt NOTHING for hours after her birth. I was determined since she was going to be the last to at least try to see what the placenta looked like! :teeth: The doctor held it up for me to see and when I said "Ick!" he said something to me I have never forgotten: "Be glad you're not a cow, you'd have to eat this!". :crazy2:

My after birth contractions with my second were WAY worse than with the first... OB said it was normal to feel the contractions (read increased pain!) more with subsequent pregnancies.... I'm allergic to Codiene so when they offered me Tylenol 3's I couldn't take them... it was loads of OTC Motrin for me!

No one warned my either. After I delivered my second I asked my Sister and Friends why they did not tell me, they forgot about the pain. WHAT!!.

It was very unconfortable and with having all mine with C-Sections it was worse. It does not last long though, maybe a day or so.

Good Luck.

:confused3 What pains? I had 2 C-Sections and never had any pains after. In fact as soon as I was returned to my room from the recovery room I had the Dr. remove the IV. And I giggled my way through having the staples removed before I left the hospital.

Speaking from my experience, the after pains were much more intense with my second child. I don't remember them with my first. As for the hemmorrhoids, the first pregnancy it was awful. I had too many to count and stayed off my feet for almost a week after giving birth. BUT, I didn't have any with the second pregnancy. Guess everybody's experience is different.

Good Luck

I didn't have any afterbirth pains with the first one and when I left the hospital felt like I always had. The afterbirth pains w/ the second where noticeable and I wouldn't say painful except when nursing. But it didn't last very long.

My second delivery was worse all around.

With DS#1, the minute he was born, I never felt another ounce of pain anywhere. I also had an episiotomy with him and felt this helped the birth so much.

With DS#2, I had no episiotomy and I felt like I had been beat up for about a week after the delivery. Also, the stitches with that one were very painful, whereas the stitches with the episiotomy were not even noticable.

It will be just fine :D Just think "Hey I have a cute new baby" everytime :d

I had after pains worse with #2 & #3, but it wasn't unbearable. It sure wasn't worse than pushing a baby out! Lamaze breathing helped, as did tylenol. Eventually they went away. It wasn't bad enough to make me give up on birthing, although the hemorrhoids with #3 were pretty bad. I caught a cold in the hospital and my bottom hurt so much I couldn't cough--I developed pneumonia and was sick for about 6 wks!

No afterpains that I can remember with either delivery, even with nursing. I did tear with both, and needed stitches. But I can't remember them hurting very badly either - just a little uncomfortable.

Thanks for the information! :)

Let's see, unless there is an emergency/complications I will be having baby boy at home. So no nurses, drugs, episiotomies, for me. :) I only had a very small tear with DD that didn't require any stitches. Stitches freak me out also. I will have motrin and tylenol on hand though.

With DD I had the placenta right by me in the water (in a bowl). We we didn't cut it until all of the blood was done pumping into her. My MW showed it too me and said it was nice and healthy. LOL!

I am hoping for a nice fast labor. And also not a lot of pushing. I pushed for an hour with DD.

Haven't decided if we are going to do a water birth or not. We will have to see when the time comes! :)

I remember the after-pains with my second were AWFUL! Almost 7 years later, I still remember how painful they were.

The strange thing is that I had no after pains with my third :)

My 2nd was alot easier! I left the hospital after 24 hours (as long as hubby promised that I would take it easy). I felt 100% better than the first time. Good Luck!!
