After 15 years we are selling

We have been in this since 1992, and while we are not looking to sell -- and probably never will --- our usage has changed. Our daughter was 5 when we bought in, now she is 29 and our son is 21. The are still Disneyholics, and in fact went on their own to WDW last week. We go for fewer days, but with more people and in bigger units. We will have 6 in a VB Beach cottage in August. When the kids were young, it was all about quantity -- as many days in a studio as we could stand. Now not as much.

Next year, its 7 of us to Disneyland and the Grand Californian. Some day, to Aulani. We could sell for probably 150% of what we bought it for, but we won't. If I get tired of paying the dues, I'll rent some points to cover it and use the rest.

For those that want to sell, its a good thing that DVC has held its value, or increased in value. Makes the sell decision a bit easier.

Hi There, :wave2:
We have only been members for 8 years and I still love, love, love our DVC. :thumbsup2 Our kids were teenagers when we joined and have just graduated from college. They are having a hard time figuring out how to use our membership as they aren't planners (is anyone under 30 a planner???). :confused3 Meanwhile, over the last few tears DH and I are using every point on cruises, GV for family to come to Food and Wine, a two BR villa for in laws, and a trip to NYC for July 4 to see an off Broadway play a former student wrote. When the Magic is gone we will sell too, but right now we are enjoying our experience.

We sold our contract after 15 years of ownership for all the reasons you listed. We are planning new vacations. We don't have kids, and it just didn't seem as magical anymore. Best wishes to you.

Wow... We sold partially for those reasons, but more specially like the KD saying goes "we didn't leave Disney, Disney left us". (One example is Pleasure Island... Don't get me started on others).

We owned for about 11 years before we started selling. We still visit but nothing like we used to (even though we now live 20 minutes away).

All in all when we bought I felt buying was the best decision we ever made.

We are happy we did it... But only for 11 years.

You never know... Those who buy specifically for longer contracts..??

I always hold Disney is not for everybody nor is it the right thing for people at all points in their lives. Sometimes you need it, sometimes you don't.

We will be sad to see you go, but I leave you with these parting thoughts. Disney teaches us a few things. It can be easy for some to find them at WDW, it's easier for some to find them elsewhere. Wherever you look:
* always keep the magic alive in your heart
* Never stop playing. Never stop believing. Never get old.
* "Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, dreams are forever." - Walt Disney

And above all, Always "Have courage and be kind" - Cinderella's mother.

Keep these things with you wherever you go and the magic that Disney brought you thorough the years will always be with you.

We sold some contracts and will probably sell some more as Disney/DVC continues to cause us to lose the magic. How long will DVC make us use a website that only works sometimes?

The more I think about it, we probably wont end up selling....I do however see quite a few resort only vacations!!...I guess the reason for this would be the fact we paid $70 a point for our points, and there is too much "I cant believe you paid $180 a point for the same room i can stay in for $70" disbelief going on.....I also think between using the points in places like Vero and HH as well as renting points, we probably will just hold on to them.....I am certainly NOT one of those "well we got it for the kids to use" people!....if we are not going to use it, then it is gone....The investment I am making for my kids is the tens of thousands we are paying for college. They can turn that investment into creating their own Disney magic.....but I do know a place where I will sell them a relatively cheap resale!!! ;)

Reminds me of when I owned a sailboat -- happiest day, second-happiest day... :rotfl2:

Heretic!!!

But yeah...gotta wonder about that logic if you really think it through.

Random reactions:

Yes, it is possible to go too often. And, yes, there are plenty of other places that are worth visiting. We were able to start taking vacations "for real" about twelve years ago, when the kids were three and five. Over that time, something between 1/3 and 1/2 of our vacations have been Disney-focused (DLR, DCL, WDW, and DLRP), but the majority have been all over.

It's also true that one's vacation styles change more often than one would think. The past few years have seen us traveling less often than "average" because the kids' schedules are increasingly complicated. Soon, I'll be down one when the eldest starts college. In two more years after that, we'll be empty-nesters, completely changing the game. We've spend spending less time doing Disney-things as we try to pack in other destinations. In the next year, we really can't plan anything in advance with my son because his calendar is packed with two varsity sports, one club team that plays in a league with no other teams in the state (so lots of travel), and college prospect camps for his primary sport. Our vacations will be soccer tournaments in several different Midwestern states!

Finally, it's true that Disney has absolutely gotten more expensive. But, I'm not all that sure it's out of line with the rest of the "vacation world." There is a bit of a price premium to the resort, but that's often true of resort-style properties---and even sometimes true at other high-tourism spots. All of my recent vacations have been on the pricey side, food-wise. That doesn't mean Disney is any better of a value that it would be otherwise, but the grass is not exactly greener at any prime vacation spot.

That said, I am looking forward to going back to Shanghai, and maybe taking my family with me. Once you take care of the (expensive) flights, the rest is surprisingly affordable, and now that the Park is open, well...
