Our final two days of the safari portion of our trip brings us to one of the more famous lodges in Africa - Chobe Game Lodge. As the only permanent lodge inside of Chobe National Park, it has perks like being able to get on our game drives before the park officially opens to other groups. Of course, that also brings with it even earlier (5am) wake up calls
, but it’s worth it when you have time just before sunrise to watch lions walking just outside the camp before the masses descend.
It’s by far the fanciest lodge we’ve been to - apparently the host to Elizabeth Taylor’s second wedding to Richard Burton. I do have to say, after all the camps we had been to, while the room was luxurious and the facilities 5 star, we felt that the place was a little impersonal for our tastes.
We did one sunset boat trip down the Chobe River, which was nice- great views of elephants and their babies playing in the water, but the highlights of these days were the make lions - which we hadn’t seen before now. It certainly made up for that and more, since we not only got to see some up close, we got to watch a lioness defend her cubs from a male as well. In fact, the fight ended up being right behind our safari vehicle.
Otherwise, we didn’t lack for other animal viewing and again, all the meals were fantastic, including a Boma dinner (African BarBQ) and a private dinner for the four of us in our last night. We ended up meeting back up with a number of other couples that we had met at other lodges - it’s funny how much people’s itineraries would overlap. We even had the same Belgian couple in our vehicle for the game drives again. We really got to become good friends with them, despite some major language barriers. Those are some of the memories that we’ll definitely take with us.
We had one last early morning game drive (which was supposed to be a sunrise boat trip, but we asked to change it) before being picked up for our ride across the border to Zimbabwe and Victoria Falls to continue the rest of our vacation.
