Am I the only one who has a DGD (almost 5) who is afraid of pirates?

She's watched Peter Pan and, while she doesn't cringe (and, believe me, she can be dramatic), she clearly states that she doesn't like Cpt Hook or any pirates.

I've mentioned the pirate party and she thinks that is a bad idea.

I would not let her watch Pirates of the Carib. since it isn't age appropriate (imho)......

I assume she'll be more pirate-friendly by 2011 but who knows?:confused3

Also, how long have they been doing the pirate party and might they be changing it up like any other Disney "show"?

The pirate party has been in place since 2004 and probably won't be changing soon with POC4 coming out in another couple years.

And...Capt. Hook does roam around the ship from time to time and take "prisoners"....my DD18 at the time was "abducted" by Capt. Hook as we were walking down the hall on Deck 5. It was all in good fun and she was released in a minute or two!!! LOL!!!

The pirate party is hugely popular, so probably won't be changing any time soon. The good thing is that she'll have time to meet her servers, etc. before she sees them dressed up on pirate night. Maybe you can prepare her with the idea that they're "just pretend" pirates....she met them before as regular people. Discuss the idea that it's just like a halloween party but many people are dressing up like pirates.

That and a couple of years of maturity might help you. If she doesn't want to, don't make her go to the deck party. Of course, do the sail away party and explain that the deck party is a lot like that except that the people dancing on stage are dressed like pirates.

Characters won't interact with her unless she makes a move toward them--they are used to recognizing kids who may be shy or afraid and will give them space. As above, pirate Goofy pointed a sword at our 18 year old guest on our last cruise....but there's a huge difference between an 18 year old obviously willing to play along and a 5 year old.

If she is still somewhat afraid when you cruise, I suggest you watch everything from up on Deck 10. That way you can look down on all the pirates and you will have a great view for the fireworks that follow.

Let me preface this by saying that I love pirate night, BUT in reality pirates were the bad guys, and still are. Maybe the little girl caught some of the news of recent pirate captures of ships. In any case it's certainly a more realistic thing to fear than, say, the boogie man in the closet. Especially when you'll be at sea when the "pirates" are coming! :scared1: I think fear of actual bad people shows wisdom at an early age, so good for your granddaughter! :thumbsup2 On another note, are they seriously making POTC4? #3 was dreadful!

one countries pirates were another countries privateers, and heros.

Arrrrrr ya up on yer history?

maybe you should explore that, and 5? wait 6 months or so and don't be suprised if it changes.

Even I (old) thought the pirate party was scarey. Unless I have to go to make other people happy, I skip it.

My suggestion is for you to search thru YouTube for pirate night videos. There are a bunch. Then let her watch them. There is a lot of music, dancing and Mickey's grand entrance.

I hope they don't change the pirate night show. It is my favorite and this is coming from an old pirate. Argh!
