We're moving from Las Vegas to Orlando in June. I've started to get quotes and such and since you asked for prices, I thought I would share what I've learned.
We've decided on moving pods, after comparing the prices of uhauls and driving ourselves.
U-Pack would be $2700 for one pod, $3700 for two. That includes door to door delivery, taxes, etc. But we're going in June, so it may be a bit cheaper in May, since summer is considered a "prime moving time."
The Uhaul moving pod is $1700 for one pod, or $3000 for 2. However, they don't transport them to your door. You have to pick them up at Uhaul and transport them to your home yourself. If you want them to drop it off, it's about $250 to drop the pods off, so $500 extra to drop if off empty at your current home and drop it off full at your new home.
These were both much cheaper than pods, pack rat or any of the other companies for us. We originally thought we were going to need 2 pods, so u-pack would be the best option. But now we're thinking we may only need 1 (we're dumping most of our belongings as it just doesn't make sense to move old furniture), in which case the u-haul one is the cheapest, even if we have to pay the exorbitant pick up and drop off fees. I've also heard that if you follow both uhaul and upack, they sometimes offer coupons, so that may help reduce the price a tiny bit as well. I just haven't looked much into that.
We also looked at doing a Uhaul and moving it ourselves, but a mid-sized moving truck was about $1500, plus a couple hundred for the car trailer. Add gas (a lot of money for gas as those things get such poor mileage), hotel each night, food and drink, not being able to work for at least five days each, the fear of having your uhaul broken into while you are sleeping overnight and sitting in a moving truck with a 9 year old into the mix, and it just wasn't worth it, and was very comparable in price to what we would be paying for the pods and plane tickets.
We're only taking one vehicle, and we're shipping it with an auto shipper. We've gotten several quotes for an outdoor shipping method (they ship them on those big trucks you see new cars shipped on) and they range from about $800-$1200, so we're planning on about $1000. If you want enclosed car shipping, it is a lot more expensive.
On top of that, we then have to pay for one way plane tickets to get where we are going, a rental car, as the car can take up to two weeks to get there, and moving boxes. Of course, this is our experience, and I would thoroughly research your options, but you had asked for prices, so I just wanted to throw them out there.
