I think what you describe is supination. (bearing weight on the outside of the foot)
Pronation is bearing weight on the inside of the foot.
Ditto on that. Supination is actually much less common than pronation, but unfortunately, supination typically causes more problems.
I'm a supinator. At one point, I couldn't stand/walk for more than 1 hour without extreme pain. I know this sounds cliche, but the thing that really helped me was losing a significant amount of weight. As far as shoes...Chaco sandals were definitely the most comfortable for me. They're pricey (around $100), but definitely worth it. Teva sandals actually made my supination worse since my foot rolled outward too much. For regular tennis shoes, check out the New Balance website. There are 3 or 4 styles of shoes that are specifically recommended for supination.
