I have recently started running again and i am trying to train for the princess half marathon. I have been wearing Nike free run and my knees are killing me. Can anyone recommend a good pair of running shoes that aren't going to set me back $200. :scared1:

I swear by my New Balance 1065's. I can usually find then on Amazon for $65-$70, as opposed to $130 in stores. Bought my first pair when I started training for a half five years ago & I won't wear anything else.

You need to go to a running store and get fitted for running shoes. There are so many different kinds, kinda like there are so many cuts of jeans. You don't have to buy them at the store you get fitted in. Have them write down all the info on them and you can check online to see if you can find them or something similar online or somewhere else cheaper. You may also be wearing the wrong size. When I went to get fitted they put me in a shoe 2 sizes bigger than I had been wearing and it makes a huge difference since feet swell when running. Good luck and I hope to see you at Princess next year!

I agree with the other poster. You should go to a real running store and get fitted. Make sure it is a specialized running store as I have been to a local sports store and they were of no help. I like the NIKE Vomero--they are nice and cushiony. They are about $130. Try runningwarehouse.com after you know your style.

I absolutely love my Mizunos. The Mizuno Wave Riders are 115 for the newest version but after I got fitted two year ago for them I just buy online. I got Mizuno Wave Rider 15s for only 79.99 and even free shipping. I saved almost 40 bucks

I also agree about getting properly fitted.

DS's main sport is soccer which he plays year round, but he also runs Outdoor Track at his HS. There is a small local chain of running stores around us, and they are WONDERFUL. They spend a lot of time watching him walk, jog & run, then bring out a selection of shoes based on his gait. He tries them all on, and depending on how they feel, he keeps trying, or more often than not, he picks one of their initial picks. We get all his running shoes and his competition spikes there. The trainers fit him perfectly, and I have not had to spend more than $100-$130 for them.

Oh wow I had no idea that I needed go get professionally fitted. What kind of stores do that? I don't think I have ever seen one in my area. We are a mid sized area with plenty of shopping too.

Any running specialty store can do this. The store we go to is Marathon Sports (their downtown Boston store was gravely affected by the Boston Marathon bombings, but we go to one of their suburban locations).

This is their website, just so you can see what they are like, to find something comparable in your area:

I agree please go get fitted! I just got fitted for the first time last week and my new shoes make such a difference! I was in the right size and brand but the style change has done wonders for my legs :thumbsup2

Personally after the nice gentleman at the store spent all that time with me picking out shoes, measuring my feet, looking at my pressure points and watching me run I bought the shoes from him. They were $115. When I need a new pair I'll go online and order the same pair again, probably for cheaper but I thought they deserved the sale for the service.

Get fitted it will save you money in the long run

I agree about getting fitted. I have always worn a size 10 but my most recent running shoes are a 10.5. I am actually going to go up to an 11 for my next pair. I started with the Saucony Grid Cohesion 5. At shoebuy.com, they have the Grid Cohesion 6 for $55. There is also a special mother's day code for 20% off. They offer free shipping both ways so if you don't like them, the only thing it costs you is time.

I am going to get a pair of the Grid Cohesion 6 to run in for the summer. Since I need new shoes now and I'm running a 1/2 marathon in November, I want to make sure I have relatively new (but broke-in) shoes for that race. I'm going to buy another pair of Cohesion 6 right now and use them for the summer. Then, around September, I'll get a pair of the ProGrid Guide's.

Definitely get fitted at a running store. And don't worry. You will be able to find a pair under $200 :-) There are many good shoes for around $100. Running stores are really good at helping you pick out a pair of shoes that fit you - especially how your foot strikes - overall how you run. It is well worth the money, especially if you are training for a half marathon. Definitely buy the pair you like from the running store. After the first pair - if you like the shoe - you should be able to find them at other sporting goods stores.

If you are running several times a week, be sure to get a new pair every 6-8 weeks. Running shoes wear down. Believe me, it is much better to pay the money to have good quality running shoes - instead of getting injured and having to pay a doctor or for physical therapy.

Congratulations on your goal - and happy running!!

I agree about getting fitted.
I'm not a runner but a walker, and I have foot issues.
I work on my feet a lot, so it was a growing problem.

I finally went to a rehabilitation doctor that specializes in feet and ankles.
I wish I had not waited so long to do this!

The growing pain in my feet and almost continual foot cramps were due to the complete lack of structure in my feet.
My feet move in ways and directions that most people's don't, and I needed special orthodics to correct the lack of structure and make up for the super-pronation.

The corrective orthodics have helped all my joints from ankles to hips.
I no longer have cramping in my feet, and my balance is even much improved.

One of the things I learned is that our feet are constantly changing, so what worked well 3 years ago may not work as well now.

Our insurance does not pay for anything foot related
(don't get me started on how silly that is- if you hurt too much to exercise, you think that affects the other aspects of your health?! :scratchin )
but the cost is well worth the healing I have experienced and renewed ability to exercise and have a better quality of life.

If you are having foot and joint pains, it might be beneficial to see a foot doctor.

Look up Fleet Feet and see if you have one in your area.

I wear Mizunos as well. Could you pass on the website where you buy them?

Definitely get fitted at a running store. I love my Asics Gel-Nimbus, but they might not be right for your feet. We got DD10 fitted a few weeks ago since she has been running 5Ks - her shoes were not cheap (they are Inov-8), but they are so much kinder to her feet than the ones we bought on our own.

Like a PP, I bought my first pair at the store that fitted me because of the time they spent and the service they provided. I have bought subsequent pairs online, but we do buy other things at the store to give them business.

Get fitted, at a specialty store, and spend the money - you can get a good pair for $100, not $200. Going cheap on running shoes is asking for problems with your feet and/or knees.

Sorry I didn't see this. I was away from disboards for a little bit. I got my older model one from www.dickssportinggoods.com but you can also order them from Footlocker and a few other sports stores online. I have only seen the old ones in a few running stores.

You should definitely find a running or tri store in your area and get a professional fitting. They will measure your foot in several different places and then watch you run in your current shoes to see how you run. Then they will determine what type of shoe would work for you. You can easily get a good running shoe under $150. Good luck with your training!

I just got a pair at new balance - I have wide feet and was shocked to find that I ended up in an 8.5!
